Default What would you make of this?

Hey guys,

I'm a bit suss on a phone call I received about half an hour ago.

A guy called me claiming to have seen an ad for my EA in the Trading Post. I told him he must have the wrong number or something, but he knew all the details about my car and asked if I was interested in selling it. At that point I was really suspicious on him, and gave him a flat No, telling him it's never been for sale and never will be.

I then proceeded to ask for some more details, like where he was calling from and to read the whole ad to me. He said he was calling from Cranbourne, and that he didn't have the ad because his brother had called him and told him about it.

It brought back memories of those guys who had their car for sale on CarSales, went and met up with some people who were interested and then handed the keys over at knifepoint.

I also remember in Year 12 we placed an ad for the Principal's car (Au1 Fairmont) and put the school's phone number down, and put a price of $3k. So I thought someone could have placed an ad as a prank, but I haven't been able to find an ad.

What do you guys think?

Sundeep

Sunny, wasn't there another incident like this recently involving someone using your photo? Doesn't sound good at all.

Nah I asked him but he said he didn't have the Ad on him, and asked what I would sell it for. I'm not like it's not for sale so there's no price tag.

I specifically did, and he told me this week's Trading Post. If anyone finds an ad anywhere for my car let me know. I will chase it up.

Yep, we threatened him with legal action and he promptly got rid of the pictures. It was a guy flogging off some performance miracle on ebay.

Private number. Not much chance of finding out who it is, due to privacy blah blah blah.. which sucks.

Its probably some dickkkheaad off the forums man.

Problem is that he has your phone number, so who knows what else he has.

And if he is a forum member/user its not hard to find out other details about other forum members.

That sucks mate, but it wouldn't be hard to gather details of your car from here, and get your number from your for sale threads...

Be careful, the scum of the earth will go to any means to get what they want unfortunantly...

TUF.EB and I both work for Telstra mate, that definitely doesn't happen. There is no way (at customer service first enquiry level, which is about all you will get for this) you can get numbers that have called your phone if that person's got their number sending off. It breaches the Privacy act.

So yeah, I've got no idea what to make of this.

Thats pretty much it.

Even if you put in a report to the Police and you feel as if your privacy has been breached and you want that person to stop calling you, all that is done is, the Police send a letter informing that party to stop calling or further action will be taken, and you still do NOT get to know who the person is that is calling you, because its a breach of THEIR privacy. Interesting stuff ey!

If caller ID was active or there was a way to get the callers details, this thread wouldnt even be up.

I should've just not let him know I was suspicious, and told him I'd meet up. Could've filled up 5 cars with 4 people in each car + assorted weapons and seen what happened.

Prob a Thief who got your number off your for sale adds.....

You car has been on show recently, maybe they liked it....

All they would have to do is google your number plate and a link to your posts/threads on Ford Forums would appear then from there seach your posts to get your phone number.

I think I've narrowed it down to someone from work. Can't quite figure out who it would be, just got my 3rd prank call for the day and it was work-ish related.
