Default P Plate Truck Drivers

Hey all,

When i used to be on my P's and driving a semi Adel - Bris i used to constantly be called up on the UHF "Copy in the Orrcon with P plates?" "Yeah, got ya." "What's with the P plates??" I used to get so sick of explaining myself...

I'm wondering what the regulations in other states are?

In SA, you must have been PROVISIONALLY LICENCED for a minimum of 12 months before upgrading to LIGHT RIGID or MEDIUM RIGID and then hold that licence for a minimum of 12 months before upgrading to HEAVY RIGID or HEAVY COMBINATION. 12 months later minimum you may obtain MULTIPLE COMBINATION.

In SA, as a PROVISIONALLY LICENCED driver you must display P Plates while driving.

I was having the aged chat with a driver several months ago in Banyo and he was telling me that P Platers in QLD don't have to display P Plates which doesn't sound right to me.
Apparently NSW drivers aren't allowed to have P's and drive Trucks...

So.....???

You have to abide by the laws of the state your licence is in, ie if your from SA and have to display P plates then you have to display them.
Also in NSW P platers can drive a truck, same situation as you, red P's light ridged, first green P's you can upgrade to heavy ridged

Vic is the same as SA.

Mates little brother applied for an exeption circumstances exemption and was able to go straight to his HR. Supposed to disply P's, although he never does. He doesnt drive very often, but doesnt even own a log book. Going to come unstuck one of these days!

In NSW you have your L's for 12 months and have to do a mandatory 50 hours driving, then you progress in red P's for 12 months limited to 90km/h then you go to green P's for 2 years, and your speed goes up to 100km/h.

XHUTE6, re the HAWK front bar, i don't think so

Schmidty, he's gonna get caught out and there's gonna be big trouble... i'm on my 2nd log book now... despite having cancelled about 50 pages of my 1st book... I've nearly mastered the habit of filling it in on the move.. Once again, i'm glad to not be from NSW.. nc006, that's a shame about the bar.. i don't suppose you could give me their phone number??

I have the NSW Heavy Vehicle Drivers' Handbook in front of me...

You cannot upgrade to an LR or MR licence while on your red P's, and you must have held a class C licence (at least your green P's) for a year or more.
For a HR licence you must have held a class C, LR or MR licence for 2 years or more.

For a HC licence you need to have had an MR or HR licence for at least 1 year, and for an MC licence you must have held a HR or HC licence for 1 year or more.

I wouldn’t worry about mastering this art. The Task Force don’t take kindly to this sort of thing as it’s blatantly obvious when you’ve been doing it.

I don’t even fill mine in with the engine running (when it’s on the steering wheel) as the vibration can leave some words (names of places) difficult to read. If a copper or RTA officer can’t read your book properly, they write the log book’s author out a special little gift certificate.

It can be very expensive to learn the hard way about these things, especially in QLD. :

There is only one P Plate in SA and they're Red / White Background..
Regardless of what car, truck you are licenced to drive, you must display your plates.

Thats strange.

My licence says P2- P plates not required to be displayed.

None of my mates from SA ever had to display their plates either..

Technically speaking, in Victoria you must display P's for 3 years, which means:

You must have 1 years driving experience before you can get a LR or a MR and 2 years experience before you can get HR.

So working on someone geting their licence at 18:
1. this means that at 19 they can get a LR or MR (on P's)
2. this means that at 20 you can get HR (on P's)

But if you were smart, the rules say you must hold a MR or a HR for 12 months before getting HC, so at 19 you get a MR, hold it 12 months then go for a HC, this short cuts the system by 12 months, so technically you could be in a HC at 20 (on P's).

Here is the Vicroads link

i obtained my MR when i was 17 and only upgraded to HC in September last year. I didn't feel the need to upgrade as i was happy driving rigids.. i got sick of that though.. in SA you can be 18 and hold an HC. I'm 20 now

Oh, and BTW, you are expected to display your P's for whatever duration the State Laws say you should.

Yer im on my P1s in SA. in SA u have to have ur P1s for at least 12 months and u must display ur plates but then u can apply for ur P2s and do the hazzard perception test. If u pass u dont hav to display ur plates when on ur P2s. The laws changed in October last year or 2005 i think.

it was a bit of an exaggeration mate.
maybe about 10 pages at most?
A mate told me when i first started driving "Never be afraid to cancel a page but make sure you cancel it before you sign it!"

Ok. I'll re-phrase that... Why did you cancel them? This is usually only done when you get a new book and the remaining pages in the old one are cancelled by the RTA.

I don't mean cancelling unused pages. I mean if i make a mistake in my book i just put two parralel lines diagonally across my page and write CANCELLED in between. Just so i don't cop any nasty fines etc.

Ah OK. I've never been brave enough to cancel a page, not that I've ever had to. Have the RTA or HP ever said anything about that to you?

No not yet. They just draw their own line in my book and sign it... They don't ask me what time zone i'm running on so they always draw their line half an hour ahead.. Might be a little interesting if i get pulled over in the next town and wonder how i got there so fast?

If it’s the Task Force that’s going through your book, they won’t spend any time wondering how you got there so fast, they’ll just book you.
