I'm on the look out for a new work ute. was thinking maybe a AU xr8 but I've seen a couple of nice XR6's with the VCT engine but I don't know much about them but have been told that they are heavy on fuel compared to a standard I6. true ?? so how good are these motors & what do they go like ? I hav'nt driven either of these utes yet; still waiting for rain to stop.ones manuel ones auto will the 5 speed be much quicker than the auto ?

it's not only the motor ... there are different options available aswell regarding interior!

my mums VCT is more economical than my standard i6. but thats cause she drives it soft.
they go alright. sound alright when you get up em. the 5 speed is about 1 second quicker down the quarter than the auto.

With the VCT, you've got an extra 8 kW/nm over the XR6 HP motor or 15kW/nm over the standard I6. Obviously runs a different head and commensurately an ECU etc to match.
Unlike the sedans, there's no weight difference due to the rear suspension being the same setup. The fuel consumption difference would be more pronounced on the sedans than on the utes. Because of the 3.45 ratio diff in the XR's, the tall first gear in the BTR boxes isn't as accentuated, however because of the much shorter first gear in the T5 it will feel quicker in acceleration off the mark.

They are heavy on fuel. Well mine is always in power mode and only goes on cruises so it sucks some juice.
Went through 50 litres on a cruise from adelaide to mannum and back last weekend.

I got a vct manual, does about 12L/100 to work and back, bit more on weekends
 but average about 600 - 700 on tank of fuel (80L) i am very happy with mine, but they are prone to clutch problems so be carefull when looking at them.mine goes pretty hard, just got exhaust fitted today n sounds bloody awesome Marty |

since changing to a fully synthetic 5W-40 my VCT Ghia sedan is averaging mid 11L/100km in city driving, mid 12's when I frequently boot it (so whenever it's wet or I'm in a rush). At constant highway speeds I get high 9's
Whatever oil was in it when I bought it must have been , I could only ever get a best of 13.5L/100km's but would usually get mid 14's |

Have a VCT Ute here and they are a great thing. Would recommend any time.

So nothing wrong with the motor ,its just a shame ford didnt put as much time into the build of the car.
