Default DC LTD 5.0 Problem!

...and its not mine. My mum also has a DC.

I've got a problem and im fresh out of ideas. Im not going to describe what ive done/checked, just the symptoms so I dont confuse the issue.

when cold, no issues. once driven for approx. 10km, if you drive 1-2 kmph it has a thumping/knocking noise that can be felt through the whole car and is audible. above 10kmph it is silent. seems related to rotation of wheels. present with engine on or off.

car has the standard 3.27 LSD and king standard height springs in the back (deleted SLS). car has only done 110k.

suggestions welcome!

is it a real deep thump or is it more of a kocking noise like exhaust hitting the tail shaft, the axels arent bent are they?

Drop a burnout and see if that fixes it

Perhaps you could get someone to stand outside and listen for anything?

I had a vibrating shudder and nocking in my diff when taking off very slowely, it was the diff plates sticking. A change of fluid fixed the problem. Also my old XF falcon used to nock at low speed but cleared up when accelerating, this was stuffed diff centre bearings.

Low speed, Speed related not engine speed.

Tyres maybe, gearbox mounts? Its hard to say.

Have a good look underneath on a hoist with it ticking over in gear.

I reckon it's the diff. The LSD in my EA did that, got the oil changed and it was all sweet.

OK, thanks for the ideas fellas keep them coming.

taken the diff back plate off and there was no filing etc in it and the diff oil level was correct. changed the oil anyway and put penrite 85/140 LS oil in. have taken the axles out and checked the wheel bearings but they are fine.

If it is the LSD, what are the consequences of just leaving it? to be honest we dont give a shit if the lsd is ****ed, we just dont want to damage anything else (the car is being used for a round australia trip soon!)

seing its going on a big trip id be looking at getting it sorted. Having the rear jacked up and the wheels moving results in no noise right?

Does the noise alter at all?
listnen to it whilst coasting, turning, reversing, accelerating and braking.
Put the rear of the car in the air (on stands) and run the car.
Does it sound/feel to come from front ot back?

after discussing the problem with a differential specialist we've decided to try taking the center out and shimming the lsd cone clutches. that seems the most logical thing.
