a got my p's 5 years ago and my driving instructor told me to touch of screen every 5sec's but dont touch it when it ask's is it safe to pull out. i passed no worrys thought it was funny 1,2,3,4,5 touch.

my g/f and her friend passed it first go just recently so if you failed it then you don't know as much about driving as you think.
but yeah they did say it was very pixelated and hard to tell one object from another. get back on your horse and have another go mate.

I passed the HPT test ~80% few months back, the other tests 100%.
I'm an experienced driver (~8 years in Europe) but the freakin' HPT wasn't easy due to poor picture quality and irrelevance to the real driving experience.

Personally I don't know of anyone who has failed thier NSW HPT.
I do agree though resolution for the vids are a bit poor, like they were taken with a $10 webcam
