They discovered just how fast when police stopped and arrested their chauffeur after allegedly clocking him drag-racing a P-plate driver at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The happy couple were cuddling in the back seat when they heard police sirens and felt the car suddenly brake.

An unmarked police patrol had been travelling behind the bridal car, a rented Holden Caprice, and allegedly caught it at 70km over the limit.

John Tauranga, 21, and his new bride Laina, 20, were left stranded on the Great Western Highway in Sydney about 9pm on Saturday while police took fingerprints from their driver, 42, and confiscated his hire car and driving licence.

Mother of the bride Bernadine McCully saw her daughter marooned on the side of the road as she was driving past.

"We were on our way home from the reception and I saw a woman in a long bridal gown walking up the road, holding up her dress," Ms McCully said yesterday.

"I said, 'My goodness there must be a lot of weddings on today', and then I realised, that's our daughter."

A shocked Ms McCully feared the worst when she saw police cars lining the street.

"We thought they had been in an accident. Luckily they were fine," she said.

Ms McCully said it was outrageous if a professional driver had street raced with another car while taking her daughter home.

"He could have killed them -- and they had not even been married for 24 hours," she said.

"They are young and have their whole life together to look forward to. It is shocking.

"But they are safe and sound and on their honeymoon now."

The couple have flown to Hamilton Island to celebrate.

Penrith police officer Hamed Baqaie said an unmarked patrol car had noticed a P-plater driving a white Holden Commodore pull up alongside the black Holden Caprice at an intersection.

"They were driving at high speeds, revving engines, tyres squealing and they travelled quite a distance before police managed to stop them," Sgt Baqaie said.

"They were pulled up a good 700m from the intersection."

Sgt Baqaie said the chauffeur, from the Sydney suburb of Bankstown, and the 17-year-old P-plate driver of the white sedan were interviewed by police.

Both their vehicles were confiscated and the men were issued court attendance notices for taking part in a race between vehicles, driving dangerously and exceeding the limit by more than 45km/h.

The P-plater had three passengers in his car.

Both drivers are expected to appear before Sydney's Penrith Local Court on January 21.

It was most interesting to see that the police car was a bionic F6 with no markings at all. If the situation was as reported and the passengers support the story so I suspect it is then the limo driver should be banned from driving for life and required ro serve a custodial sentence.
There are an enormous difference between private and commercial driving. When you are being paid to provide transport you have a duty to act in a professional manner.

(not that I have strong feelings on the subject)

I agree, it comes under his duty of care. I was also supprised to see an F6, with no markings on it. At least the police were kind enough to give the newlyweds a ride home.
