Default Shonky or Genuine

saw a pursuit250 for sale owner says gen. 68000km. Drivers mat has worn right through where heel sits momo wheel shows heaps wear and header tank all browned. Contacted by email and last genuine ford service was dec 2004 and he has serviced it since then (says he's ex mechanic).
My sons xr8 has around 200,000km up and his momo is not worn as much header tank not as dirty and mats heaps less wear.
mmmmmmmmmmmm think I'll give it a wide birth it sounds suss to me.

Yeah as T3 JET said obviously it isnt a standard inlet manifold for a 250 looks like a Victor JR or the likes. Does it have brembos or anything like that (i know they arent standard)

reckons he changed to superflow heads the manifold big cam and roller rockers for increased power. He also said he just replaced serpentine belt tensioner pulley and idler pulley clock spring and 2 actuators. Thats a lot of things I felt shouldnt need at 68000k

Haven't seen it in the flesh. So many things are changed these days (new tanks, new mats, ebay clusters, Pads) usually find if they are high Km cars they have had work done and the hose clamps aren't genuine and the underbody at 68 should still look pretty good. If I was looking that would be the tell tales I reckon but I always get nervous when they say they have serviced it themself for last 4 years my hunch is (last service by ford in 2004, buy ebay cluster and put in when selling. love to know what K's the dealer recorded in 2004)

Doesnt neccesarily mean it "needed" it, he may have just replaced it all while it was being worked on. Actuators etc are fiddly buggers of things and could fail at any time. Things like steering wheel and floor mat wear wouldnt stop me from buying a car, the guy might have worn through it with his wheel from driving it every day, and the wheel could be just from heavy use - Ive seen a lot of MOMO wheels that look like utter crap after only afew years (that said though, mine is still perfect).

like I said the sons momo and mats look nothin like that and they have been there every day for 200,000K's and he wears baxter boots to work. This bloke must have sand paper hands and spurs. Personally I think its bodgy and decided not to go too much further on it when he emailed and said there was no dealership record since 2004 at least then I could have rang the dealers and checked their invoices for milage at services, anyway dont matter now I think I'll give it a miss mine has similar milage to his and I too wear work boots and always use the mats with no wear like that. Full service history from someone other than himself (self professed ex mechanic or not) and maybe my son would be lucky.

My MOMO wheel isn't that much better than that and my header tank is worse than that, have been since I git it with 78k on it and that was all confirmed and legit. If you aren't sure though I'd leave it.

i would`nt go by the not dealer serviced too much since 2004, i have had mine for 3 years its never had 1 dealer service but i can tell you its had more tlc than some dealer serviced cars with twice the k`s, what Xr220Au3 said get it up on hoist and let the car tell the story however, for me knocked about interior and altered engine parts (go fast parts) i would be looking elsewere........... unless the price was reallly really really cheap and could`nt pass it up

Yeah i agree Russ id leave it and find another. The mechanical things that have been replaced as Austin said even though it is low KM doesnt mean those things didnt need replacing. But if it were me it would be enough to turn me away. But if you are keen call 13 FORD and they will confirm the cars details if you have the VIN

My header tank looked like someone took a crap in it. Wheel and knob were in fair condition and mine had done 70K. It had missed its 60k sched serv (Included in new car price) So ford did the service for free. I was paranoid too. Only thing you can do is to continue to do as many checks/research as poss. If one element of doubt exists, then keep looking.

Worn mats may have meant he wore heavy boots?

I have worn straight through genuine XR mats and but my car had 120,000ks when i bought it and thats how i got em. The wear could be due to the mat getting wet and heel wearing it out on top, which could indicate it might be leaking, as it looks like what happened to mine. Because it leaks on the exact same spot as where there hole in the mat is.
