So theoretically, to put an XR8 motor into a 6 cyl AU (as is thread starters intent), you would need the diff and tailshaft from either a V8 Forte or Fairmont. Ute stuff would obviously be no good.

Yeah, not sure on whether the ute stuff is any good but i dont think it is.
But bits from a V8 Forte or Fairmont would do the trick

Ute stuff wouldnt be because tailshaft is longer, and leafs at the rear

go to a wreckers and see if you can compare a i6 tail shaft to a v8 one.
take a tape measure and measure them and count the splines on the input shaft.
would save a lot of money seeing no one has a definate answer.

I6 tailshaft cannot be used on a V8 engine.

You can still use your existing diff, but just the tailshaft would need to be a V8 one, or have yours modified for around ~$200. You also have to get the same tailshaft with the right transmission. Manual & Automatic tailshafts are different lengths.

Ideally it would be better to slot in better diff gears and LSD, which you need to find from any Live Axle AU Sedan. If you want 3.23 or higher, you need the housing to go with it, and do a straight swap. But for the hassle, your better off just getting a place to rebuild your current diff with gears and LSD that you want for around $1500, as they would be brand new instead of a 2nd hand set for $650 that will most likely be shagged.

It sounds like a great deal, but personally all the effort and time required, I'd keep with the Forced plan.

Goodluck with it.

whats the difference???

why not just swap the bell housing on your gearbox then????

will the v8 bellhosing bolt on the i6 box?

maybe i should have posted it a bit better.
will a v8 bellhousing off a btr bolt onto an i6 btr ,or are they the same?
is the v8 box the same as they run in the i6?

i'm pretty much 99.9% sure an IRS diff centre will go into a live axel setup.a call to a reputable diffshop would sort this out .

You'll get a tailshaft no worries.

Go for it Daniel, then you'll truly be able to spin em up, just like Habib! LOL!

^^^^^That's exactly how all of my wog mates refer to the bloody things! I'm possibly the only one in existence who doesn't!

You just missed out on a cheap as TT kit to suit a 5lt - Dave (Ghia5l) was selling it for $1200, just needed a fuel system. I think he said it's still pending payment, so you could always keep an eye on his FS thread.

Actually for a wog, it took me a while to get it! Five Litre! LOL!

Gee upon reflection, you must have a few wog mates to even make that gag connection, let alone post it! LOL!

the live axle and IRS guts are the same
confirmed by a chap on here who owned a diff shop

id presume the tail shaft may be different tho due to the play in a live axle tailshaft (due to being able to move up and down)

also you cant use an EA diff as they had 25 instead of 28 splines like EB onward
