i was looking into buying a 90mm Maf but when i took out the top airbox lid i noticed that the hole for the maf is much smaller than 90mm. In fact i got a ruler and measured 90mm and there is quite a difference in size from the standard maf hole to 90mm. has anyone installed one to their stock airbox and what was involved. There is a plate that sits between the maf and the airbox lid, did you have to buy a new one with the maf or can u just modify the existing one?

Personally I can't see the point in having a 90mm MAF with the stock airbox as there will still be a restriction in the airbox lid negating any improvements that could be made by the 90mm MAF. If you are serious about intake upgrades there is no point in going that way. Best off to get the intake pipe, MAF & airbox all sorted at the same time.

i dont recon itll fit at all ill be orderiung mine soon and i think ill make a custom fibreglass air box for it as i cant see a 90mm maf fitting at all.

It might be worth looking at a BA pod type setup, maybe it would be easier to fit it to one of these as opposed to the standard AU box.
I dont think a MAF would fix an idle problem though?

yeah i might do some cutting of the stock airbox and see if it will fit. i will order one now and do alot of thinking about how i will go about it. i might even buy a 6cylinder lid and cut some holes into that just because its got a bit more room to work with as the 8s have the holes and and nuts attached to it. If i get it to fit i will take out the panel filter and replace it with a 4inch pod filter inside the box. ive got a pretty good cold air intake system on it at the moment and dont want to get rid of it. if i manage to find a way to get it on i will post it up for people to see.

i thought the v8 airboxes have got nuts attached to the airbox for it to fit the standard maf onto it. these nuts will just get in the way of the required 90mm cutting to fit the new maf. i will need a new airbox lid to experiment with so i will just grab a six cylinder one for the sake of it.

would it make any difference if the MAF is a little furthur down the intake pipe? i can probably get it sone on the stock airbox but the maf will be closer to the middle of the intake pipe rather than straigh out of the airbox lid.

I6 air box lids are the same as XR lids - there is one difference, but both have the nuts you are talking about - the 8s get a MAF, and the 6s get an adaptor for the intake pipe. The difference is the 8s (some, not all) get a trumpet like thing on the inside of where the MAF mounts, but other than that, the lids are EXACTLY the same (I have had 5 of each roughly, and have swapped between models and series - EF to AU and back again etc - and I Mean swapped lids and airboxes not just the cars). I have seen MAFs mounted right up near the TB - I don't think it's recommended, but it can be done. I seriously reckon the BA XR8 Pod box is the way to go though, as it will take the 90MM MAF with no modification at all.

Another option is to buy an 03/04 Cobra airbox off Ebay, Uses the same filter as BA XR8/GT but with a flange cast in ready to accept a 90mm Lightning MAF. I believe it is the same as the T3 airbox, without the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ pricetag.

hey JC,
where did you connect your tickford cold air intake up to? performance wise did make much of a gain fitting the new airbox? im starting to lean towards that style airbox now but i will wait until i get my maf and i will have a look if it is possible to fit it on to the airbox i got now. Is the cobra style the same as installing the ba xr8 one?
