If you think you are strapped for cash now, wait until you're in your 30s, with a wife/GF and a rugrat or three, and a mortgage, or even just renting. We are all cash strapped to some extent, just some weeks are better/worse than others. Plus cash is such a last century concept anyway, lol.

Sorry to hear about the old man Daniel. Good that you spend great time together working on cars and such. Many young blokes would give a leg to have been able to do that with their old man. That's a pun by the way, not a go at your dad.
Good onya for gettig that apprenticeship, I reckon your dad must be proud of you. I also reckon you'll go a long way. All the very best with it. GK

I hope he's not offended, as that was most certainly not my intent. You know the saying "so in so would give their right leg for ......."? Ah nuts, I'll quit while I'm way behind! Sorry for any offence to you and your dad Daniel. In any case, he seems like a good kid/bloke (quite spirited) and It's great that he and his dad support each other and have shared some difficult stretch of the road together. GK

Daniel was one of my first AFF contacts and I know that he knows what he's talking about, but is also willing to put his hand up and ask questions if unsure. He's one young man i dont mind giving some time for to help him out...
As far as i know, you can run the AU engine off an EL ECU... but have been advised to drop the coilpacks for the older dDistibutor type... using the EL ECU means that you dont need to worry so much about the BEM issues that will show up...

Just to give you an idea what I was getting out of my 5L engines:
1992 EBII Fairmont Ghia V8 (165kw) - 10.8 to 11.8 litres/100kms combined city/highway 1994 EF Fairmont V8 (165kw) - 11.5 to 13 litres/100kms combined city/highway 2001 AUII XR8 Rebel (220kw) - 12.0 to 14.0 litres/100kms mostly city/some highway All were automatics and had K&Ns, both the EBII and EF had modded exhaust system. Gives you a bit of an idea across the range. |

Back on topic after that slight outburst, if your old man is after an auto 5.0l I'd be trying to find a 220kw engine out of a late AUII or AUIII. Easily the best incarnation of the 302. Or if you want it on the cheap there is a 5.0l on ebay atm for $1500 odd. I'm just not sure on whether it is the 185, 200 or the 220 but I think it may be the 200kw. As for economy in mine there is none lol. Bit over 20l/100k around town but down to about 11-12l/100k on the highway.

AU XR8 II/III bolt can be wired up with the EL loom? if that's true thats the cheap way to get around all the anti-theft gear that apparently is fitted on the AU engines?

Daniel, the link to the wine bronze Falcon 500 in your signature doesn't work. My dad had one of these (a wagon) and I'd sure like to see the pics of this car. GK

yeah there isnt a thread on it yet mate!.. but if you go to the Blue XYs thread.. there are a few pics of it in the last couple of posts.. its a bare shell... didnt even have a diff in it when i bought it, and its got rust.. but not as bad as some, and its had some rough paint it with blue straight over the bronze, parts are bronze parts are blue : long term project is to take the look of it back to stock but have a nice 393 alloy head clevo toploader and 9" with decent gears.. its going to be a fun car

around the suburbs I get between 460 - 500km per tank, pretty reasonable I reckon.

Just got back from 700kms on a long weekend trip and averaged 10.7 l/100 which included 200kms of round-town pottering and 500km of 110km cruising with vigorous overtaking. (Stock AU2 XR8 220 with 2.5" exhaust).
I usually average 15l/100kms around town, but I think these things really suck the juice with short trips and running rich whilst warming up. Best DTE showed cruising to be be in the low 9's (L/100km) |
