Default AU Mystery # 465

Well the summer heat is on again in down town Melb. and of course so is the mystery splutter, cough . stall of number 2 sons SR 111 : So having got the obligatory "this piece of **&@#$* has stopped again" phone call we set out to retrieve it from its resting place of last night, on the side of the road, unfortunately no one stole it or set fire to it over night : . As some would know this has been on going for some 18 months with all possibility's being explored, the list goes on Fuel filter, Plugs,Leads, Coil pack,Injector clean, 2 readings from scan tools still no luck, So with a bit more forums advice on board I decided the fuel pump must come out ,what POS that is to get out : (how to thread later) anyway here"s what i found :

Black gunge is like Vegeimite , So it looks like a trip to the speed shop when they open again to see if the sock is a replacement part or a new complete unit is required, then lets see if that fixes the POS ( worse part is it would seem this all comes under parental dutys and out going expense as any reimbursement is a futile dream

Not sure on the black crap,(May pull the one out of my XR just to check it now) but he has had the car since new, and its done 180000 ks,apart from a few minor bits this has been the only issue I carn't figure out so far. Looks like I may just drop the tank ,clean it replace the sock or pump and hope fully that will fix the problem. on the down side every time I have done a replace and see, it came good again for a few more weeks . :

Must have been an extremely bad load of fuel or someone has put something in your tank or the fuel cap has been left off in dusty conditions or the vapour hose has become detached at one end allowing dust into the tank (ever had a smell of fuel vapours?).

PS Note with these plastic tanks you are meant to loosen the tank support straps retaining bolts a 1/2 dozen turns before removing or replacing the pump as otherwise the thread on the top of the tank where the retainer ring screws on may get distorted and either leak or get cross threaded. While 95% percent of the time you will get away without doing so it worth detentioning the tank retaining straps just to be sure - just remember to re-tighten when you are finished

Perhaps you should ask him if he's been filling up whilst a tanker has been there dropping fuel.
