Mine had lights in the radio before I replaced it, thats a series 1 Futura double din, and mums series 3 Fairmont does too, every radio I've seen has lights through it.

Just throwing things out there, when you turn headlights on, the backlighting for the clock dims slightly, maybe the radio lights dim a little as well. Maybe theres some sort of wiring issue, and instead of dimming, its turning off completely? Dunno, just running ideas. Also how healthy is the Alternator and Battery? Checked all fuses are good?
