For the last 6 months or so I've been watching this guy around the corner slowly doing up this house after it was for sale.
Ripped out the garden completely, new solar panels on roof etc. Then yesterday I saw him building this huge shed for his Valiant hardtop and Land Cruiser. He was up the ladder with the drill and his wife below admiring his handy work, it was a huge double garage/shed. Today we had some strong winds and when I was taking my daughter for a driving lesson we went past his house, ohhh nooo ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That is pretty sad. Poor guy is doing the right thing, trying to do his house up...Working hard and this happens.
Maybe you should go and offer to give him a hand?? I always feel for people who try and give it a go and who unfortunately fail...

Oops! A bit of straightening out to do there I bet. The other thing I noticed is
how dead and brown the grass is in the surrounds. Has it been a dry winter or is that an old shot from summer months? |

It’s obviously designed in accordance to Australian standards....wether or not he followed correct construction procedures...Although in saying that, if it was a wind event greater than what that particular shed was specced for, that’d be why it fell on it’s ring. Actually looks like a GW shed too...Uses cold form steel and GW apex brackets and uses top hats as opposed to Z purlins...

he might not have done the diagonal straps yet... amazing how much one set of those stiffens the whole structure.

no bracing is why it went down, while in construction you should have the portals braced to the ground, or at least up until you have the dia bracing fitted...

He may not have gotten it up to strength when the winds went threw, either that or he didn't read the instructions properly

From what I'd seen he just got as far as the frame work and had to down tools. No sheeting had gone on.
So somehow it blew down or fell down overnight. As for the dry grass, yes we're in big trouble here in the west. Bugger all winter rain, our crops are no good too. Our one dam is only 1 third full as opposed to half full last year and we still have to get through summer.

he should have had the portals braced to the ground from the begining, this is the first step after standing the portal frames..

At least his Hardtop Val didn't get demolished with it. Now THAT would be a disaster.

damn... i feel for the guy. i have just spent all last week building the frame for my shed, (a bit bigger then that one) and i would hate to see it on the ground.
we had everything tied both ways with ropes until we got the first too portals up and the cross braces on. amazing how much difference those cross braces make. a lot of it could maybe recovered and stood back up with a bit of panel beating. good chance to meet your new neighbour. offer a bit of help.

you dont have to guarantee the work, if its for free he cant hold you accountable anyway, its an act of charity.
