If your working in Altona Nth, I'd recommend Altona?
Altona, especially closer to the water has come a long way from years gone by.
Seaholme (up-market part of Altona) is also quite nice.

Thanks for everyones help. Should start work in about 2 weeks in Altona North, living at Sunshine because its a free place to stay for the first month or two till I find somewhere I like, so that gives me a month or so to learn a bit about Melbourne and look around and find somewhere I like.

Haha, I'm staying at a transport depot which has a unit attached for drivers to stay if they ever run out of driving hours etc, except it hasn't been used for months, probably longer. So I can use it as long as I need, security is pretty good at this place! Behind big electric gates, staffed 24/7, barb wire, security cameras. Sounds a bit like a gaol actually...

Just the average household security in Sunshine, make sure the big electric gate is locked.
