I've started noticing a whine coming from the rear end of my AU1 Forte
(95 000k) and I'm presuming its the diff. Much worse when the rear seats are folded flat as the noise travels through. Recently reading through a copy of the Haynes Manual and they recommend changing the diff oil every 90 000k. Any one agree with this? I have'nt checked the owners manual to see if this is done. Is it tru that the diffs are typically noisy in the Falcon? |

Is the whine always there, changing pitch/volume as the road speed increases? (bearings)
or is it only at certain speeds? (gearset) Changing the oil is easy. The bolt in the middle at the bottom of the diff cover is for draining the oil. 1. Remove the bolt, draining the oil into a container 2. tighten the bolt back up 3. Remove the filler plug from the diff cover 4. Add oil until it is level with the bottom of the filler plug 5. tighten filler plug back up I put Castrol SAF-XA in my ute at 100,000km, and i had my diff rebuilt at 180,000km. I'll be changing every 50,000 from now on ;)

i got the same problem as you mate, starting to sound like a bloody taxi! its worse when you drive it "manually".

Rob - that will be your auto trans. Get an auto trans service done, and I reckon they will find metal shavings in the pan/filter. This noise is why I got my auto rebuilt under warranty.

the car has already been in once for this, they found shavings in there last time!
i think i will wait till she gets rooted then stick in an LSD and some new gears, after a bit of research! cheers rob |

The noise is constant and does not vary much except when you back off and coast which could suggest its the diff or tranny, but definitely coming from the rear end.
XR8ute, when you changed the diff oil, did you notice any difference? If it is bearings, what do they generally cost to replace? |

Last weekend I changed the diff oil in the wife's wagon. A check whilst changing rear springs recently showed the diff oil was very black, and frothy. The new oil did appear to quieten things down slightly.
Have you checked the level in the diff recently?

No, my diff wasn't making any noise when I first changed the oil. It was making heaps of noise by the time i got it rebuilt though....the bearings were rooted.

Checked the diff oil and it looks and smells good and is right on the edge of the bolt hole as it should be. The noise could be the bearings.

how would you go about checking your bearings?
is it an wasy job? might be a good idea to change mine as the car used to be used as a tow car for a 19 foot boat interstate by my old man, and always copped salt water up to its balls while launching the thing! |

on the topic of diff's can anyone suggest a good oil for an AU XR with an IRS / LSD Diff?
Mine makes the occasional moan when cornering at low speeds and i doubt its been changes in 80k's |

I like Castrol SAF-XA, it was also used and recommended by the guy that rebuilt my diff. I am pretty sure the solid axle LSD in my ute would use the same oil as the IRS LSD?

Im going to change the diff oil in the fairlane (IRS, Open Wheeler) next weekend. How much of the oil does it take and what is recomended?
