was driving to a friends house last night, and all of a sudden the "check ABS" light comes up on the dash.
I pull over and check out the owners manual. "Take to a mechanic as soon as possible. Brakes will still operate but without ABS" So right... I have brakes still, but not fancy ones. So we keep driving, and I take it gently just in case. Lucky I did, coz went to stop at the lights behind another car, and my brakes just about shat themselves. The brakes were VERY innefective, and I could feel a grinding sensation coming up through the pedal. It was making a wierd and expensive noise too :( like a jammed drill... car was pulling in pulses to the right. Im just glad I was making sure I left a huge gap between me and the car in front. If I had needed to stop quickly, I would be up effluent river without a propulsion device... Driving home, brakes were fine and the light satyed off. Am going to take Monty to the car doctor as soon as I stop procrastinating and studying... :nutsycuck Any suggestions as to what it might be?

At a guess no pad left. The bits of metal could have come off and jamed the ABS sensor, as it only is a small magnet.

Besides the ABS issue, have you checked the pads and discs lately?

By pads he does not mean the fleshy bits at the base of your palms.
Disk pads replacement is a fairly easy repair (assuming no damage has been done). Get a capable friend to assist lest you drop the car on your scone. Or take the car to a reputable repairer ASAP. |

So should I jack the car up and have a look?
see what I can see? If its too much I will just take it to someone who knows what they are doing, but Id rather learn how to do things myself. Im very good at vehicle electrics after 3 years of LandRover ownership! Damn british electrics... "Lucas the Prince of Darkness" :P

Jack up, take off wheel, and you will be able to see the pad thickness. It's a realllly easy job to change pads.
/Now back to working on my hack LOL!

Bugger it.
Off to the mechanics. Dont know where the sensor is, or what to do with it. Not going to buggerise around teaching myself with my brakes. I kinda need them, and you dont exactly get a second chance if you stuff up...

Don't use the mechanical retard line forever. Do you want to be the one to fund him sending his daughter through the private schooling system???!!!

nah... I always use the same mechanic and he always shows me how he is doing what he is doing. Always gives me a discount too. For an hour and a halfs labour and the use of the diagnostic machine and drive testing and pulling things apart, he charged me $30. Showed me how to replace brake pads while he was at it! So for anyone in the Hornsby Area... go to Hornsby Heights service center. Theres only one mechanic, and he is great!

have you tried tightening the castor rod?
thats what mine was. Top shock bolt was loose too... Problem solved after extensive trouble shooting. It was a mechanical problem. nothing to do with ABS

My dad tells me that me and my sister's private school edjukashun was paid for by people who played that very mechanical retard game and "just wanted it fixed right now" regardless of the cost and to ensure they wouldn't get their hands dirty. He made me do stuff on cars and to make mistakes so I would learn (you only let sump oil run down your arm once) Look, listen, ask silly questions. I won't be a mechanic when I finish uni but I'm glad he made me do all that stuff on cars and fix the EA he bought me. "It's easier to pay someone than figure it out yourself..?" I think not in the long run.. that's a cop out |
