however you're quite right. all BS aside, young and old, we are all responsible for our own health.

I'm turning 37 tomorrow and I've been having prostate check ups once a year since I was 35. There is no family history of it in my family apart from uncle. All it takes these days is a simple blood test to check the protein levels. It's something that I reckon every bloke should do once a year over the age of 35. Even though it generally strikes later in life there are more frequent cases of younger blokes getting it so it's definately worthwhile getting checked. If it is caught early then the survival rates are extremely high.

Blood test is much easier. If done done regulalrly, your doctor has a baseline, and will pick up any fluctuations. This can alert him much earlier than the ole thumb in the bum, and can also pick up signs of other prostrate problems.

Yeah I know but when I had my first one - "Every man should have one when they turn 50!" - it was lie down and...

I don't know if the first one has changed these days.

The worst thing your mate will face now is the range and choice of treatment options, there are many and confusion might reign.
The good thing is this is a relatively slow progressing cancer so there is time to consider options.
If your mate's specialist is a urologist (i.e. a surgeon who would operate) then I suggest he ask for a referral to an oncologist ( who would treat with various radiation therapies) and vice versa and consider the options. These guys aren't like car salesman each trying to sell him on their product, but will work together with him for the best outcome for his individual situation.

Hi LG17,

PC is not only for the mature aged and 63 Is young however, @ 45 I had always had a Blood Test (PSA) for the possible symptoms of PC which also showed a 0.02 reading so, you can imagine my surprise after having problems with an enlarged Prostate and needing an operation to help relieve the pressure on the urethra to make things "Flow" easier, the Biopsy showed that I had PC. The Specialist, couldn't believe It needless to say neither did I. Anyway, I ended up having It out and now have an implant which work's well for me. another thing to remember what I was initially told was "You can die with PC It and not from It" you just have to be vigilant.

Yearly PSA checks should be done, by all males..unpleasant. but worth it for peace of mind.
It is more embarassing for a woman to have a PAP Smear than the PSA check..

a good friend of ours was diagnosed with PC a few years ago, severity was at the upper end of the scale however it was caught fairly early.

He had surgery as well as the newer treatment of radioactive implant and is cancer free 8 years on.

The biker community is known for the Pink Ribbon Ride, but how many know of the Big Ride, which is for PC?

Perhaps we here at AFF could look at some sort of annual fundraiser for PC, seeing as most car enthusiasts tend to be guys, and it has touched an awful lot of the members here either directly of indirectly
