cant recall many people working sundays? but paid union attendance, no doctors notes, and legacy no productive flexability work practices are an on going problem for the whole industry .The Union needs to be prgmatic and turn the thing around . The plant can produce 160000 units a year that will bring the unit cost down to better than kentucky. They need to sell more!! and Australia wont yield the difference because of all the other 60 brands??

One thing that always gets forgotten in conversations like these is the fact that we are affected by the tyranny of distance. To export thousands of cars the freight component must be added to the cost. Look at the UK. Their currency is perhaps the most over valued in the civilized world. But they export 100 times more than we do here in Australia. But their market place is right on their door step... The European union is also a bonus to them...

Which ever way it is looked at. No matter who is to blame. It is cheap imports and Australians willingness to buy them that has killed car manufacturing in Australia.

Apart from our cost of living ( and therefore labour cost ), it costs a lot more for us to export than other countries that are close to their export markets.

Geoff Polites was right, we need to be able to support local production with local sales, exports are the cream on top.

Once the local market volumes dropped, Ford Australia's plants' were doomed.

How many other exports are now in danger due to overseas competition ?

Pretty much everything that is made I reckon. And once commodity prices are undercut by overseas exporters, we are in the **** !!

We are already in the crapper, walk in to any store other than a super market and try and find something Australian made , you may find something but it will be hard work, and then you will have to look at the materials it's made from and where they come from.
It would be interesting to see just what the break down is of import versus fully Australian made and supplied , i would take a punt and say about 90% import............ and on that note we should all give ourselves a swift kick in the bollocks for allowing such a travesty !!!

a clear indication toyota is leaving the workers must know, that's why they wont let go of theses extras or the union is dumber than i thought

Given that closure is now all but certain, I'm curious as to what will be of the engine plant. It underwent a $300 million overhaul just 2 years ago.

Probably break it up for scrap (rather than any of it going to competition)

toyota shouldnt have agreed IN the EA negotiations then
they agreed to this in conjunction with union and non union workers

i agree, some of the conditions and stuff they get is a bit far, but those fools agreed to it
and dont give me the old if they didnt agree no one would have worked and the plant wouldve shut crap
they shouldve negotiated a better EA

A the end of the day, if they don't agree to terms Toyota will close. That attitude will get them real far...

Part of the problem is a good percentage of people these days don't want their employers to stay in business. ....... because they want the payout........... money now, worry about employment later.

I just went thru one after our company laid off 85 workerss.

But anyway.....Toyota is stuffed.
