Sport advertising, and motorsport advertising in particular, usually centres around brand preference.

Where the consumer will be buying a product anyway, the advertising sways them into a particular direction.

If there are two servos close by, their price per litre is around the same, and one is Shell and the other BP; by sponsoring DJRTP Shell hope you'll choose their product.

In my younger days I probably was more prone to buying a product that sponsored a Ford. Coco-cola certainly got a thumbs up from sponsoring a particular red mustang. I still do favour some things but not as fervently as when younger.

If a driver or team swaps out from Ford however they are off my active list until they return. The only exception was Moffat when he went to Mazda. I could however never barrack for Holden in a race.

Sport sponsorship definitely sways my opinion of an organisation. For example, when GM sponsored ManU with Chevy on their shirts, which then completely left the European market while the logos played on, it convinced me they are a beer short of a six pack.

I got to say sports sponsorship has not influenced me much buying X product.
I might show allegiance during a discussion but thats about it.
