Hi Kylie.

You may also want to post it in this part of the site as well.

It's aimed at Escorts, Capri's, Cortina's etc ........

https://www.fordforums.com.au/forumdisplay.php?f=80

All the best and welcome.

Looks like somebody already did it

My escort is CK which I believe denotes Homebush plant in Sydney. Can't find anything about CN though. Looks like Cortina were assembled in Broadmeadows

I'd say that your CN7820B is more than likely the original engine number fitted to the car when built. If it was assembled at Broadmeadows, as Simon Varley suggests, the code would be CG or CL where C=Ford Britain export CKD and G=Passenger vehicle line OR L= truck assembly line. The truck line was only used for Capri Convertibles from 1988 though. As far as I'm aware all early Escorts, Cortinas and Capri's were assembled at Homebush, code K.

the cn number on the shocky tower is the engine number
which refers to a gt engine 1600 if it started with cm it would
be a standard 1600

Kylie,

your number you found is the VIN number, this should match your engine number on early Mk2 cortinas (if orig eng) This number will NOT match up with your ID numbers stamped on your ID plate or on the radiator support panel.
Going by my findings, a VIN starting with CN was usually a GT model. Is yours a GT ?
