Default Head cracked?

Hey all.
So i might of cracked the head or blown the gasket. Was running without coolant for about 10kms at 100kmh, engine was steaming.
Car is now drinking coolant at a level of 3 litres per 5kms, Huge amount of steam coming out of the exhaust.

Now, i've rang HM Gems engines and they reckon i'm better off replacing the engine instead of just the head. Is this true or do they just want my money? Definately couldnt afford a new engine right now, if the car was running without coolant for 10kms, is that enough to stuff the bottom end? And if the head is OK and its just the gasket, would i even need to replace the head?

Cheers!

Head would need a shim to be square at least, it is more then likely warped, how HOT did the temp gauge show during the steam run.

The temp gauge was one of the causes of the problem. I looked at the gauge and it was just at the end of the L in NORMAL, it didnt go any higher so i kept driving. Then it the car stalled at the toll booth (LPG converter frozen) and had steam.
Then once it was steaming and the car was off, the temp gauge was just before red. Its not very accurate and flicks all over the place randomly before this was happening.

The mech quoted me $2755 engine fitted. Would that be a reconditioned engine?

upto about $2000 for a full rebuild, and then a days labour of about $700, so price aint bad, but at the expensive end.

Do you think the bottom end would be ok? I could exchange my current head for a new one for $585.

How many k's has the motor done, you might just be better off to replace it, I think seriously consider an ef/el motor from a wrecker with warranty should cost about $600

If the head is warped / cracked, what are my options? I have no problem taking the head off myself and attempting to do it myself.

warped can be skimmed square, cracked it could be welded but basically consider a paper weight.

I would really, really consider another motor complete from a wrecker to be honest.

$585 is alot for an EA head and you will never ever get that money back to sell it, no one wants an EA head.

Ah ok. How time consuming is it to switch motors ? I'll obviously need a hoist

To pull motor and gearbox out, swap motor drop it all back in takes about a day of work, so plan a weekend, I few members here can do it in less then a day easily, but we have done it a few times for various reasons

Hey steven. How much do you want for the head? Though you might not want to go to the trouble of disassembly If you were in NSW i'd snap it right up.
