Ill say it again, dont speed and you wont get busted. Just because o have an AU and its on LPG doesnt mean i havent been fined for speeding.

Had a chat with traffic camera office and they have not yet been briefed on new cameras on the Hume, but concencus was they are time over distance cameras. I believe they are still in test and development stage. I tried the phone number of project manager for development but could't get through.

I would have thought fatigue and not speed would be the greater danger on the Hume for crashes.......... What is Bracks doing about Fatigue?

I've noticed out on the secondary "highways", of late, an increasing trend toward sitting on 90 km/h in the 100 km/h zones. I ran across three of these on the way back from HPR yesterday afternoon and ran a little experimentation to see what speed had to be reached to safely overtake these vehicles.

The first one I went past at exactly 100 km/h and it took an entire overtaking section to do so safely with sufficient space to pull back in front of them. Mathematically this adds up as the total time needed at 100 km/h to cover the extra 30 metres required (from 2 car lengths behind to 3 car lengths in front based on a 5 metre long vehicle) is 11.1 seconds and 300 metres of actual distance. OK on an overtaking lane but not funny spending 11 seconds in the wrong lane otherwise. (Note that these calculations do NOT include the time required to accelerate from 90km/h to 100 km/h as they are based on the assumption that the closing vehicle is already doing 100 km/h - add about 1.1 seconds and 30 metres otherwise).

The next one I just went around as fast as I could in 3rd gear from 90km/h - according to the VBox it 3.9 seconds in total from acceleration to lift off with a VMax of enough to lose a licence in Victoria.

It really presents an interesting dilemna. Legally we would be obliged to wait for enough clear road to overtake safely or stay behind them.

During my driver training for my current employment, exact words used by driving instructor, were when overtaking I don't care what speed you do, get back as soon as possible. I live by this rule.

I agree, this is the best scenario, but I'm sure some cops would still book you if you got caught doing it.

Too much attention is paid to speeding and not enough to the many other anto social driving that goes on. Speed is not the only killer but if you look at the amount of attention paid to you would think it is but of course its nothing to with it is easy to catch people and make lots of money from them.

I have heard this from an instructor also, and even Brocky & Skaife have said this in their motor columns in the paper. Makes sense, to pass as quickly as practicable and safely then return to the limit

My figures could be slightly off, but I remember reading somewhere that speed only accounts for 2% of all accidents (or is it fatal accidents).

If this is indeed so, the govt are spending an awful lot of money to fight this relatively low cause of crashes, aren't they?

..or is there another reason for this proliferation of speed (safety) cameras????

Dunno but these have been test against the cop detectors and they didnt pick up any signals, but im getting one , cannot go without my licence. And these are about $710 plus shipping from US. But Im getting mine from NZ on the website below
