Default California sues car makers for causing global warming.

Has anyone seen this yet:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...368036,00.html

Be good to hear your opinions, mine would be for the car makers to counter sue the government of california for not controlling the manufacturing process enough and for not making it law to help reduce emissions.

How can they sue the auto makers for the problem?? Why don't they just sue every vehicle owner, as they are the ones driving the car... :P

Typical american solution... if there is a problem, sue someone...

If they are succesful with it the first thing i'm going to do is sue the entire U.S, I reckon my case would be stronger than that one. lol

That is the biggest crock of BS ever! Point to highlight- Arny drives a bloody hummer and hes taking a swing at the car manufacturers! It's the governments role to control business and environmental practices, so as far as im concerned they're just trying to shift the blame. And don't forget the state of California is in debt so this is probably just a fund raising exercise to fill the government coffers!

Hmmm, this is extremely interesting. I'd love to see the legal basis California is using to launch this action. I doubt they would be arguing that car manufactures are causing the problem and thats it, there has to be more to it. Most likely, the inaction of car manufactures to a pollution threat which they were aware of.

But simply, isn't it he governments role to regulate these industries? Should be an interesting case

They state that car makers have known about green house gasses for a long time but continue to do nothing about it, to justify their case. So by that logic we should be able to sue Califoria for producing so many crap films......... after all they have known about the problem for a long time yet continue to do nothing about it. lol

Pffft. They have to meet standards every year with their factory's emmissions and it wont hold up that ONE current day car manufacturer would be held responsible for all the pollution. Why not just blame Henry Ford, better yet, the inventor of the wheel or....

It may not win legally, but what has happened, is probably their aim in the first place. Widespread publicity and recognition of the underlying problem...lawyers are evil....LOL...no i think i meant pollution and sustainability of the environment due to the effects of overuse of motor cars etc...

why should they sue the car manufacturers? they are not the only ones that are contributing to global warming....if people are so worried then dont buy the vehicles...let them go back to the age of horses and walking....why not sue the kebab places for giving you garlic breath, i mean common sence! if you buy a product then look into the effects...if they sue the industry and win ( big if) then that would lead the whole world into legal action with each other..

Sue non liable companys over an unproven environmental theory... welcome to California, I'm betting Eddie Murphy will be one of the lawyers for the plaintiff.

Let me rephrase, ....man made source....

Although i wouldn't be surprised if they tried to sue the world's cattle farmers for the same reason. Its not as if they'd miss the meat. Tofu anyone? :

I'II bet the govt of Kalifornia makes bucket loads of $$$ on vehicle inspection fees and registration and now it wants to sue the six major manufacturers? I hope the carmakers join forces and crush this idiotic attempt.
Bill.

Shouldent they be sueing the fuel companies?
After all their the ones that produce the polluting products!

Kind of like sueing the paper companies for making a container to hold cancer causing materials that you smoke

they shouldnt be suing anyone. Global warming isnt a proven theory.

Ill say it again

NOT PROVEN.

I have a theory that Big Brother is causing me eye cancer. I can sue them, but as yet my theory is unproven. Get the gist?

Even if it was a proven thing, who the frigg is California to be acting on behalf of the world?

Admittedly, a significant portion of vehicle emissions are attributed to california. There's plenty of readings on the matter. They also set the bar with emissions restrictions, the rest of the country tends to follow suit (and before we fell in love with european emissions, our emissions limits).

Im sure it'll get dragged through a few courts, appealled to the hilt etc. End of the day, there'll be no result except a handful of lawyers will get richer and the media will have a few stories to write.

Millions of dollars spent with no result.... sounds like Arnie has been learning a lesson or two from australia's state governments.

Seems to me that for years the California government has been complicit in aiding and abetting car producers by effectively 'rolling out the red carpet' for them by way of building 1000's of miles of superhighways, freeways and turnpikes across the cities and state. And that was at a time when cars were really belching out crap from their mega-V8 donks needed to push along a 2 ton yank-tank. Plus in cities like LA, effective public transport planning has eluded the government for decades.

Cars cause a lot of problems.

But people can also tune their cars once in a while. See many people (ESPECIALLY old people in old cars and young girls in old Ford lasers -sorry ladies!) driving in shitboxes which smoke more than Jack Elliot and I can't stand it. Get it tuned, serviced and you're good!
