Lightbulb Another air box mod!

Just doing a bit more investigation into air box mods,I happened to come across an awesome thread on "another" Ford forum/site.
I really think that you guys might find this intresting, has been done on an EL but same principles on the AU.
Please don't think that i am promoting any other sites or trying to take "business" away from aufalcon, NEVER!, the way I look at it is we are all part of the Ford Family and all here to help each other

Most people on here would frequent fordmods I wouldn't worry about posting links from one to the other as long as it's relevant

As quoted by "fiftyone" (http://www.fordmods.com)
"the idea is the higher pressure on the outside will help force air through the filter insted of having it sucked through from an as equal pressured side" *Warning, Science Content* (im a nerd), it also helps because as i said, i found there is a pocket of cold air that comes in from beside the left headlight on that side. should be there on all the ef el body styles. (not sure about xh's, i think they are the late e series style)

and the holes are from the pre filtration section. . . . . . . .

** Now im sure it was Casper who first kind of stumbled on this a long time ago, same principles I guess,Ive done it to my AU and induction noise is 10fold,power has increased and fuel economy has returned slighly,I will be resetting the ecu tomorrow night after work just to be safe and get the most out of this

Yeah I like to think its fairly relevant to all here, for one all you have to do is count the number of posts regarding this topic and im sure you'll agree

wouldnt that mod defeat the purpose of the snorkel? because then the air couldnt be sucked in from the snorkel as no pressure.

anyways i wont be doing that anytime soon, and since the k+n filter does nothing im finished with my CAI

Check the design of the best airboxes out there at the moment......notice none of them have a "snorkel".

Why make the air do all those twists and turns just to get into the airbox? And what becomes the "effective" volume of the airbox when there is only air getting into it from one corner?

I think the mod in that link is a very reasonable airbox modification. Certainly just as credible as a "tickford snorkel, and K&N filter" mod.

i actually spotted a quote in a users signature on here a few days back - something to the effect of "airbox mods are what you do between paydays", and i think that about sums it up. The airbox is only one part of the engine and doesnt really have all that big a role in producing power - no matter how much you cut and shut or wrap or duct your box, it wont turn your car into a weapon.

exactly

but i think its all about improving econ, being bored, or throttle response.

IMO i thought the 'snorkel' was to get cold air, not hot air from the engine bay, otherwise why not just put a pod on the TB?...then theres no work to get the air to the engine. lol :

the only thing i dont like about it, is it would be sucking in un-filtered air ? although its only air under the bonnet, but still ...........

Nah it's filtered the air comes in the bottom of the box
the filter is above it and the feed to the throttle is above that.

The K&N doesn't do nothing - it just does nothing you can feel. At the very least, after about 8 services, you will be in front in terms of air filter cost.

I put a coupla holes in my airbox, first i drilled a few holes in the bottom of the box,3/8 i think and chopped a hole out of the front of the box. Dont think it effects the air coming in from the snorkel because of the negative pressure difference, i have put my hand over the snorkel and revved it and it fairly sucks through that small tickford snorkel. So i think even if it sucks a bit of hot air at idle once its goin it helps to get as much air as possible into the box. I just have a unifilter and theres not much more i could do on the cheap. If i took the light out at the drags i would probably crack into the 14s because of the hole in the airbox but i think it might b a bit extreme? :

A true & valid statement! if I had a dollar for every airbox mod posted.......... for a TINY POWER GAIN...... It just gets confusing in the end anyway.
