Car not running right

I was woundering if anyone could help me, last night me and neb took my car out for some G-tech runs and it seemed to only run around 16.6 sec's down the quarter, it seemed to pinging alot when it got to 5000rpm.
Neb says that the car should be running a better time than that.
Any idea?

what sort of car is it? what mods you done? auto manual?

Also before anyone says its the driver its not because I tried driving it as well and 16.6 is the best I could get with a good launch and fast gear changes and reving it out hard (also tried changing earlier but didn't help).

The car is an EL xr6 5speed manual. It has I think hurricane brand extractors, 2.5inch exhaust, and the head got some mild headwork done to it when the head gasket was done not long ago. Also just recently (1 week ago) the car has an oil change, new leads and spark plugs, new fuel filter, new air filter.

It runs very smooth, doesn't miss or anything. Just 5000rpm or above it seems to ping. And its lacking power. The el also felt a fair bit slower than my car when I went from driving the EL to driving my car.. so I think the g-tech times are fairly accurate. I think a stock EL xr6 5speed is meant to run around 15.6 so it seems something is definately wrong?

So any ideas? Could it be something simple like the timing out / not advanced enough? Or a sensor giving wrong readings?

I would check the base ignition timing first, that generally makes the car ping if the timing is out of whack... Fuel regulator/fuel pump might need to be check as well.

My EL fairmont auto revs out hard to 5500rpm under wide open throttle so there is diffinately something wrong with that car.

how do i check the fuel reg and pump, and base timing lol, for the base timing you just let the motor warm up use a timing light and then see how far the line for tdc is out yeah?

sterpz base timing is set at 2 - 2.5cm before the timing mark. is this set right... i wouldn't have a clue :P he isn't at a computer now thats why i'm posting this.

ok he has advanced the timing a bit (i'm not sure how much), and he said it is running alot smoother, and feels like it is pulling a bit better (but not sure yet), also when he lets off the accelerator the revs are dropping quicker than they used to.. instead of dropping off slowly.
