Question Symptoms of a stuffed Cat?

What exactly are the symptoms of a stuffed cat? I was speaking to JC about this on Wednesday and he said that it feels really gutless below 3 grand.

Any other symptoms that you all know of?

I suspect the cat on the wagon is pretty much gone. Would a visual inspection by an exhaust place tell me straight away? How much for a stocko unit?

Let me know of your experiences please one and all, and as per usual, your input is appreciated!

GK

Symptoms of a stuffed cat, the thing doesn't meow any more and doesn't harass you every time you open the fridge...Sorry couldn't resist.

Bang it and if it rattles it's time for a newie.

Sounds like you should tell us all who quoted you that price so we never ever go there. I got a highflow universal one for my EL for $250 fitted.

it will rattle around alot, spit bits of metal out the back of the exhaust at revs, the car will feel gutless all over.. pretty much rev right out and really not go anywhere..

That quote is way to expensive, I got a stainless steel Xforce 3inch cat for $140.

I also read that a stuffed cat smells like rotten egg after a long use (where by the car is warmed up).

Midas are dodgy as, Highpoint exhausts are good and I've been told that Professional Exhausts in Airport West are good too.

Bad! I paid $200 fitted for a 2.5" Magnaflow - this included flanges at both ends so I can unbolt if need be.

Where did you get that done? It's been said here many times that a stock cat flows just fine with a 2.5 system. I'm assuming you stuck in the Magnaflow as part of a 2.5 system?

What benefits would a magnaflow (assuming it's a higher flowing one than stock) give me if any, with a stock system? Could it hinder performance in any way?

Cheers all.

The stock AU cats flow pretty well so I doubt you will feel much difference compared with a high flow but it isn't going to hurt if you can get one cheap. If your current cat is stuffed you will notice a massive difference regardless of which one you go for.

Got it done at Trufit exhaust on Warrigal Rd, Moorabbin/Cheltenham.

Had it done at the same time as extractors (2.5" catback fitted previously) and while there is a difference, obviously I have no idea whether the difference is from the extractors or cat.

Oh, and that $200 also included supply and fitment of a new exhaust tip to replace the milo tin that was previously on it.

Magnaflows are apparently decent quality cats and apparently flow higher. I only changed it because mine did have a very slight rattle, and with 180k on it, couldn't have been working too well anyway. Definitely won't hinder performance, that's for sure.

GK - there are generally 2 ways a cat is stuffed. One is the material starts to break down and blocks the cat a bit, hence the sluggishness over around 3000 rpm. The other is that the cat melts - this happens mostly when the mixture is running too lean and the exhaust temperatures are therefore extremely high. This restricts power everywhere, but for some reason, mine picked up over 3000rpm compared to under 3000rpm.

I've been quoted $350 for a 2.5" high flow cat in Canberra, so $420 in Melbourne is obviously way too high. I'd love to know these places that do it for $200 or $250, and if the cat used is actually a working one, and how long it would last!

Private 9 - Our local exhaust place does them at trade if you get one when you get extractors (around $200 or thereabouts) too. But it's a bit more if getting it done seperately.

Saw it come out of the box, and it's definitely a magnaflow cat. I'm a semi regular customer there so they may have given me a slightly better price than normal, but nothing drastic.

The only way I'd be spending $350 on what people call a hiflow cat is on either a genuine Metal Cat or Magic cat - at least they supply flow rates and you know what you're getting.

i got a magnaflow 2.5" one off ebay about 12 months ago for $160 plus postage i think, as i was putting a full exhaust on i thought i might aswell, and for the price why not...

in saying that, i'd get done what was mentioned above, if you can get flanges put in so if/when that one dies it's easier to replace, also it takes less stuffing around if you decide to get extractors and an exhaust on it at a later stage

I might get a quote from both these places tomorrow. Redef is giving me his old cat and daniel is picking it up for me so hopefully we're fitting it Thursday.

That will give me an idea of what's going on with the car. If it is stuffed though, that might explain some of those gas tuning issues I've been having! LOL!

I just bought an apparent magnaflow part no 91006 2.5" cat from ebay for $160 delivered. Couldn't be more than $50 or so to fit behind the extractors on the wagon, so hopefully will get out of this for under $250. Ours has done 160,000km so am replacing it to avoid problems, rather than having anything specific at the moment.
