Default Airbox Spring Clips

Hi All,

Had a couple of backfires in the SR over the last 3-4 weeks, the most recent being tonight when the Mrs was driving. She got home and I thought I'd better check the airbox to see if all was good.

I found one spring retaining clip was gone, found it though and a few others had lost their tension. I'm assuming the lid had lifted to cause that.

I tried to put them back in but to no avail, as it was very dark outside. I taped down the lid of the airbox (I still have 3 clips in place) with sports strapping tape, so that should get me to the weekend until I can pull the whole box out to check things out.

My question is this. The wagon's airbox (being dual fuel from factory) has springs made from coil springs. The SR was converted later, so the airbox clips are the dual wire type. If I want to replace these with the coil type that's on the wagon, can I just get some from Ford and swap them over? Anyone have an idea on the price?

Cheers,

GK

GK - they're available from Ford and are around $4.50 or so each. Pretty sure I have about 6 lying around doing nothing. Yours if you want them.

get rid of those spring retainers, they are rubish and get urself a set of teh older Au S1 type retainers, which are just clips. they clip into the bottom section and cant fall out or go walk abouts like the springs

But the coil spring type are the ones that came on my S1 Chief! They haven't been lost and the wagon (before I had it fixed) did some mighty good backfiring. My understanding is the spring allows the lid to open and spring back down again.

The clips don't allow for this, that's why they aren't working anymore, as they are now warped!

you NEED to run those spring style ones on LPG, or you'll split the airbox, seen it numerous times, and plastic welded a few up

the spring clips are designed to allow the lit to lift during a backfire, so the box doesnt split

ur paper air filter will split before airbox ... well so u would hope anyway

i seen those spring thingies on S2 onwards cars only (not even AU S1 LPG) and then even o n non LPG cars. a lot of our customer cars have a bad habbit of loosing them (seen as many as all but 1 lost before during a regular service interval)

Coiled Spring Type

Dual Wire Type

All this talk about which I need is doing my head in! LOL!

I'm fitting the ones in the top pic. These are the ones that allow the lid to lift right? I'll answer my own question. Of course they are, that's why they have a spring, to give the ability to move. The others will just hold the lid against the lift.

yes, you're correct, the coiled spring type are the ones you need for LPG cars

That's what I was thinking all along, however all the chat was doing my head in.

It could also be that I've been unwell and have had two days off work this week!

I had spring clips when I ran a proper airbox lid, with K&N flat panel, but I find that a K&N Pod handles backfires better, so that's what I'm now running. Hence I have the spring clips spare - although I actually don't have them any more. They are on their way to you.
