Default Power steering issues

Gday there. The other day in my AU 4.0, I heard a strange noise relative to revs and load while in traffic... got home and the p/s resevor was bone dry. Topped her up then chucked her on the hoist the next day. Looks as though theres a leak at the sensor in a ofa place between the rack and cross member. Since I have to drive 700km on Sunday and Ford dealers (parts) arent open tomorrow (already tried repco, nothing), can a temp fix be done... such as silicon up the switch? Or thread sealant?

What would cause the leak? An O ring?

While I'm at it I also did a search on this topic and found that to do the seals in the p/s rack 'special' tools are needed. What sort of tools are these... Ford factory ones?

Also does anyone have an exploded illustrations of the steering rack?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

There's no temp fix. The leak is from the switch itself, not the o-ring or thread.
Why don't you just put a new switch in? It's a very simple job & you can get new switches from Repco, Autobarn, etc for about $60.

I am going to buy a new sensor, except local Ford parts dept aren't open til Monday and Repco don't stock em. I'm giving Supercheap a go tomorrow, but thats the reason why I was thinking about a temp fix til then.

about the only temp fix is to keep topping the fluid up lol. is it pouring out or a relatively slow leak?

g`day smoo rebuilt mine year before last i think, it was a pain in the rear, for all the mucking around a change over rack would be easier i think , if you decide to do it, might be an idea to flush the the old oil an crap out of the system, heres a link to a few pics, http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...t=rack+rebuild
