Default Starter relay

Can anyone tell me if I bridge terminals 30 and 87 where the starter relay plugs in should the starter motor crank? This is on an AUII V8.
I have checked that there is 12V coming from terminal 30 but when I plug the wire into 87 nothing happens. Does the key have to be on?

I am trying to track down a starting problem ( see other thread )

I have swapped the relays and no difference.
The manual tells me to bridge terminals 30 and 87 which takes the relay out of the equation.
What I want to know if someone else can bridge these terminals and see if the starter motor cranks over. Try it with the key off and key on.
The manual is a bit vague.

I put a multimeter on the small wire that goes to the starter motor and with the terminals mentioned above bridged the power is reaching the solenoid.
I also checked the large 12V supply from the battery and it is also getting to the starter motor.
It is pointing towards the solenoid being faulty.
I know you can bridge the terminals on the back of the starter motor with a screwdriver but I don't want to be under the car with it trying to start.
