VCT motor has variable cam timing (VCT), punching out 172 Red V8 eating kilowatts (in it's day, not now though), and comes with IRS with a weight penalty of around 80kg (hence the extra power).

HP is the 164kw motor, with Live axle. I think the HP may have actually been quicker than the VCT.

HP was the bargain buy, VCT was if you wanted IRS. Either susepnsion setup is good, but IRS just soaks the bumps up a whole lot better.

Mostly just cosmetic.. full exhaust and CIA will be done again, but you never know with these things ;)

I think if i find the one im looking for .. VCT or HP wont matter to much.

What your saying is a VCT XR6 was as quick as a 200/220 XR8 yeah?

Hi mate,

I had a VCT. Found it a better all round cruiser however if you are keen on more mods than the intake, exhaust & tune route I'd look at the HP... also for the weight reduction as well.

Righto thanks guys, it will be kept as much as a weekender as possible... So mods will be slowly and surely added.

will just have to see what comes up for sale

VCT is much more specced up.

3.45 IRS LSD
Dual exhaust from the first muffler back
All 4 power windows
Cruise
Power aerial
Better Stereo-"Prestige" system with CD

This is for a Series 1 though, the updated models may have had different spec levels.

The extra punch at low revs is noticeable, despite the weight penalty from the IRS.

Actually the exhaust isnt twin all the way it goes to single just behind the real wheel as other side is 'blanked' off

No - it was quicker than the Holden 5.0 of 1998 (hence the red V8 reference).

Having owned a VCT I6, I'd buy one again...
Just so much smoother than the HP engine, and alot punchier..
Also IRS is sooooo much better than live axle IMO..
Handle a whole lot nicer...

Try find an XR6 ST VCT..
They have extra touches, such as bodykit and 18's...

not totally true. you just need to do stage 2/3 head work for it to be worth putting a different cam in it.

some days i do wish i had a HP for that reason tho

I have found the vct in our fairmont ghia alot better that the HP xr6 we had. IRS trumps the live axle.

Only downside to a vct is they usually go for more then a HP and last time we had to change the rear muffler it cost ALOT, think over $800 (ford part genuine). Apparently its a special setup due to bending over the IRS.

IRS has a factory rear camber kit. My XR8 is about to get dumped on SSL's without modding the IRS...
