Default Porsche 991 (997 successor) - teaser

Quote:
High-value production captures the next-generation 911 as it undergoes testing in South Africa

Here's a teaser video from Porsche for the upcoming 2012 911 codenamed 991.

We get to see the new 911 in this high-value production as the model undergoes some testing amidst the enchanted landscapes of South Africa.

Just last month we reported some new details on the model which came from a leaked Car & Driver report as the magazine was covering the 911 development team in South Africa.

We'll re-list them for you here:

Carrera S to have 400 HP
Carrera to have 350 HP, share 3.4 liter engine with Boxster S
2 transmissions: 7-speed manual and 7-speed PDK
Launch Control available on both transmissions
2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wider, 4 inches (10.2 cm) longer wheel base to accommodate HYBRID drivetrain in 2016 mid-cycle refresh
12-15% improved fuel efficiency (European cycle)
electronic parking brake
full-length sunroof
19-inch wheels standard on Carrera, 20-inch on Carrera S (20-inchers optional on Carrera)
Nürburgring lap time: 8:04 for 991, 7:50 for 991 S. "Best setup" in 7:37.

So glad they haven't abandoned the traditional manual. Porsche to me signify the greatest mass manufacturer going around.

From what i've heard about it so far its a manual shift version of the PDK gearbox, with all the electronics removed and a shifter installed.

Launch control will be interesting on the manual. The better systems tend to only be available on semi-auto's as you launch with both feet on the brake and accelerator.

Yep, the Porsche 911 (they're all 911's more or less... ) has always been the one you can actually use every day as a normal car. I've met a guy who scrimped and saved from when he was sixteen to buy and old one when he reached 25 and used it as an every day car. I've recently seen a family in a very nice late model 911...two adults and two kids...travelling past here heading out western Queensland. They're not that extreme or fragile that you don't dare take them outside city limits, and are built to be used, not polished and looked at and fretted over.

I'd have an old 911 in a heartbeat and happily just park it under the $160 "Warehouse" car cover frame out behind the house...

I have been working at a workshop that has gone the direction of specializing in porsches for the past 6 months and they really have become a car that has grown on me, porsche really knows how to put together a very nice car, I mean how mnay other manufacturers build race cars straight off the production line... and they are all excatly the same no matter whihc country you go to (with the exception of the europe race cars whihc get carbon brakes)
I'm jsut really dissapointed the carrera will be using the boxster engine... ick

I love Porsches. Fast, economical, well built, practical, no bullsht. Not driven by the typical gold chain wearing posers, great round the track if you go for the GT3.

Wonderful vehicles. I never ever thought we would see a 7 speed manual in this world that is phasing out traditional manuals. Thank you Porsche.

That's where you are wrong.
The only design component that has not really changed over the past 30-40 years is the circular front lights, they are a 911/Porsche trademark.

You're obviously not in their target market. Their market know what the car can do and what the design means.
I am one of those people who like the "evolutionary" design, you know it is a 911. It doesn't need to look "different," it looks fantastic and fast sitting still. You know when you buy a 911 it is going to perform in all aspects.
If I could I would have a 997 GT3 RS right now.

New pics...me likey...saving $$ for the GT3 RS
Quote:
Here it is, folks: the all-new 991 Porsche 911. Like nearly every 911 that came before it, the iconic coupe's design has not changed too much, keeping the line's classic styling and proportions intact. Aside from some new LED running lamps and revised air intakes up front and some thinner taillights out back, the 2012 model is extremely similar to the 997 911 currently out on the road.

The big changes, though, are more than skin-deep. The car is about two inches longer than the current 911, and features revised six-cylinder engines. The base Carrera now uses a 3.4-liter direct-injected flat-six, producing 350 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while the Carrera S will use a direct-injected 3.8-liter unit, delivering 400 hp. Both engines will be mated to a seven-speed manual (yes, we said it) or PDK dual-clutch transmission, either of which can be had with launch control.

Inside, the 911's cabin uses a design borrowed from the Panamera, with a more pronounced, downward-sloping center console. Like the exterior, nothing radical has been done to the car's innards, and that's just fine with us.

We'll have the official details in the coming weeks in anticipation of the new 911's official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

I prefer 996 and 997 shape. Low mileage 1 or 2 owner 996 prices are very realistic/obtainable these days, something I'm working towards.
And only a poser drives an auto Porsche.

Smoo,

I'm offended. I have an auto - Tiptronic - and I'm not a poser.

The dealer gave me a 7 speed PDK last week as a loaner when mine was being serviced. There is no better car. The days of manual transmissions with foot operated clutches are over.

That's a bit harsh. I think it's up to personal preference. I drive both autos and manuals. They both have their place. I drive my manual XR8 on weekends, but damned if I'm to have a manual as my daily. I suppose I'm a poser? That said, I'm sure there's plenty of people that like riding the clutch in heavy traffic. That's their choice.

Its great how the design of the thing has only just gotten more sleek, keeps the same overall look, except more modernised with each revision.

Also 7 speed manual

Everyone was probably amazed back when they went from 4sp to 5sp too I supose.

Which spec car do you have?

Not sure what I think about a 7 speed manual though, admittedly i've only driven 5 speed manuals....(in buzz boxes)

@smoo, I don't like the headlights on the 996's, they arent the right shape.

@dusty86, and with ~2/3 the HP...

I agree with smoo with the auto in a porsche, porsche is know to be a drivers car. manual/rear drive and N/A engine. Its everything a real drivers car should be. Its just a shame, porsche/AMG/M divison are looking towards force induction to meet emissions with good power

Steve JH,

Mine is a 986 with tiptronic. The computer is very clever. When driving hard, it stays in a low gear when cornering, and wont change up if you lift off. When braking hard for a corner, it will auto shift down the gears and select the best one for the corner. You dont have to think. On the few days I have tracked it, I've left it in Auto mode. Manual shifting gives no advantage.

With the PDK and Chronopack, you can dial in different shift patterns. Normal, sport and I think super sport, it works just so much better. You can just potter along in 7th, put your foot down, and it seems to just drop to 2nd and take off. Once you have driven one, you will be convinced.

Took a GT3 up and down Hotham last year and it redefined what I thought was possible from a production car. They even get good fuel economy! And the sound in the cabin once the pipes open at 4500rpm, phwooaaaarrrr.
