My car is a write off!!!

Hey Guys,

So there I was in my house playing with my new puppy when I hear the dulcet tones of outrageous wheelspin... it just keeps squealing and squealing and then finally smash... then more squealling then silence.

A minute later comes a knock on the door. "Do you own the green falcon parked out the front?" asks my neighbour (recently moved in)
"yes" i cleverly reply
"you better come have a look at it then"

My heart sank as I remembered the noise, and I go outside with a heavy heart. My BF MKII ZF 6pd XT is ripped open. I have been told by the panel shop it is a total loss, and I am awaiting an assesment.

I can't help wondering though, what would be the market value of this car, 90,000 ks on the clock and extremely well kept. Can anyone hazzard a guess? has anyone been in this situation recently? Will post some pics up soon of the car it got smashed (as i had just cleaned washed and vacuumed it)

I feel sorry for you & your falcon, It looked mint. Its sad theres people that drive like that on the road, just lucky they didnt clean up a pedestrian.

I herd a story recently of a mk1 cortina that was owned by the same family since new. It was like a family member.

They had just been on a club run & parked it in the street when a moron came flying down the road & cleaned it up. when they saw what had happened to their pride & joy they were obviously pretty upset. The guy that hit it then said to them dont worry its only an old car.

the sad thing is, the person who did it could be someone in these forums - quite possibly an owner of a high performance ford or holden (wheel spin is usually done on high-po rear wheel cars = Ford and Holden V8 which are the majority). this is also an incident which shows why buying a car new is the biggest waste of money of anything (besides going to the casino) - i personally am happy to buy a $3000 second hand car. sure i may be up for a few more service costs then a new car, but i can not lose because in resale my car will be worth the same or not much less in 2 years, and any extra service cost is well within the resale losses new car owners get, and the running costs are no less too with my last 4 cars being lpg.
The saddest thing of this incident is the monetary loss - because the owner bought a car which loses value considerable after purchase. the other sad point is the continued idiocy of hoon drivers in australia - WHY? is the question they need to ask themselves.

It could have been worse, you could have been in the car when it happened. At least the insurance will take care of it.

Some great generalisations there I guess you need to have a look in the impound yard to see what kind of vehicles are being confiscated for hoon offenses.....it might make you open your eyes a bit. Not too many hi-po late models in there.
You also pontificate on other threads about safety, but i cannot see how you think driving a $3000 clunker is safer than a newby.

To the OP. Sorry about your loss. I would think $13,000 to $16,000 is where you will be, which no doubt will be far less than you will want.

Feel for you mate, theres nothing more angering and disapointing when something out of your control like this happens. For that model i'd be disapointed with an agreed value that wasnt atleast 15k, although i believe my 04' XT with about 160 on the clock would only get about 8-9k if im lucky.

Terrible news mate, always hate seeing a nice car smashed. Hope the bugger who did it is up for the replacement/insurance costs!! How did it happened? Was some douche drifting or some silly burnouts?

When the insurance company gives you a price, make sure you try to negotiate with them. By this, let them know it has been well maintained, just serviced, accessories fitted etc etc. They usually then come back with a better offer. If you do however get over 16K, that puts you into FG territory at Pickles or Fowles auctions. Get a low K example, give it a detail and be happy.

Jarrod, really sorry to hear about the situation. Having just paid for a service adds further insult...

On you insurance papers, it should say what the agreed market value is. That should be / will most likely be the payout figure.

PS What LTD said is on the money too. eg FG maybe, condition, serviced etc.

1 new car i bought years ago, travelled without touching a thing
60,000 Ks in 9 months
Some people buy clunkers as thats usually all they can afford
Some choose to pay an amounth every month , for creature conforts, and reliability
Most who do this, dont care what they depreciate, as the difference is just worked into the next car
The payment is just kept the same, just over another 5 years
Im all for value for money
But a 3K clunker,then brake work, suspension work,tyres,paint repairs

People who earn $40-$50 an hour, would rather work an extra few hours a week , and afford that new car

Some insurance companies dont negotiate but they will come back with a decent offer anyway if you talk it up initially.. It happened to my mum's car and she ended up paying like $100 more for the later model 2nd hand ;)
