Hi all,
I need to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets on my 2002 V8 AU Ford as they're leaking.. I've had a look at the tech resources but there isnt any info there, that I could see... Can someone give me a basic rundown on how to do this, what to look out for, tips etc?? The ute has pacemaker headers/extractors.. Also what gaskets should I use and is there any additional sealant I should buy to use along with the new gasket? I have access to a hoist, not sure if this job is all done from the top or if it can be done from the bottom? Cheers, B |

Best to do from above - no need for hoist. You will need an allen key the right size to fit the factory bolts assuming whoever fitted your headers re-used the factory bolts, which a lot seem to do. Personally I would replace them with ARP's while you have it apart as the ARP ones only need a quick nip up with a 3/8" ring spanner - a lot easier.
Other than that it's just like replacing any other gasket - clean the surface of any residue from old gasket, seat the new one and bolt 'er up. All the AU 8's I've owned have always had the bolts come loose over time too, I made it a routine maintenance thing to check them.

What exhaust manifold gaskets should I get? I had a quick look online and they talk about "small port" versions etc??? My ute is a 2002 AU XL V8...

The Felpro's work well, Just replaced mine with them.
Also the passenger side extractor can be a pain, i suggest you unbolt the ancillaries bracket from that side of the engine and move it forward to proivde you with enough room.

Okay i've had a look, the bolts are all tight, albeit rusted too... whoever fitted the pacemaker headers, changed the bolts too, so they're now hex head bolt...
I'd like to replace them as well while i can, what size bolts are used to secure the exhaust manifold to the heads? Cheers!! |

They are 3/8 UNC Thread, The ones i used on my motor were roughly 1" - 1-1/4" in length.
You can get the ARP 12 Point headed ones from ebay but they are too short and will come loose.

Use the ones to suit small block chev and you won't have a problem.

For anybody interested this is the header bolts I got. PN is ARP-100-1202 and they come in a pack of 16. You can also get them in a stainless finish too.

Dunno what to tell you. I put those ones on the last AU and they were fine. Never came loose either.
