Over 50% of Territories are sold in Vic - why is this?

I just read an article which lists the top selling models in each state:

According to that list, the Ford Territory sold a staggering 7473 in Victoria, which accounts for 52.4% of it's national total of 14,261! Now, Victoria only makes up 24.5% of Australia's population, so all things being equal, only about 3500 Territories should have been sold here.

I can't figure it out. I know that Territories are built in Victoria, but so are Camrys. Yet Camry sold 7856 in Victoria (or "only" 31.6% of the national total).

I can only assume that a large percentage of buyers are Ford employees themselves? How else could the numbers be so high?

Also, another even bigger discrepancy is Ford Falcon sales in Tasmania. With that state making up only 2.2% of Australia's population, you would expect the Falcon to sell only around 230 over there. Instead, it sold a whopping 762, equaling 7.2% of total Falcon sales!

Maybe Ford employees are buying up before they are gone. Otherwise there is no other "logical" reason, other than Victorians have better taste and not being stingy and getting a Captiva.

Well, let's assume all buyers are equal in all states, without any real loyalty to one brand over another. Maybe a little more towards Ford in Victoria, but nothing that would cause sales to double over any other state. What other reasons could there be? These figures are of course, registrations, and not sales. Could it be that Ford has registered thousands more Territories than they can actually sell, to try and boost the sales figure and make it seem higher?

The Victorian government & SA governments are about the only 2 who specify buying Australian made as part of their fleet policy. That would help the numbers.

Yet, the policy hasn't helped the Camry nearly as much in Victoria, as I pointed out in my initial post...

Yep it'll be their government's policies that is doing it. There are a lot of Territory police cars and it seems that most of the intensive care single responder paramedic cars are also Territorys (or Territories?)

It is interesting that there's so many Falcons sold in Tasmania, though. I wonder if there's a few good dealers down there?

Seriously folks. The TT is a brilliant highway/gravel road vehicle. For the serious outback stuff in western NSW and all the other states you need a 4x4 with low range etc. not a high riding wagon which the TT is.

Don't get me wrong. The TT is brilliant. It's on road manners are so far above anything else bar X5 it's amazing.

But not the so-called Aust Defence Force who buy Klugers. Whoever made that decision should be demoted!

I've seen heaps of SZs here in Victoria, mostly Titaniums. I keep thinking Ford aren't doing too bad with so many on the road. I'm one of the 7473 smart Victorians with a SZ!

As an old outbacker I've dispensed with that myth before. For generations people got around the outback in ordinary cars. When the toorak tractors became fashionable and people used them everywhere in the bush they churned up the tracks, making them self-justifying. It's one of the biggest automotive marketing con jobs in history. I used to trot around the bush in a Mini van and an Austin 1800!

An AWD Territory would be perfect for most bush use.

There was a big push by Ford with the Employee or associate discount, that could zone it to Victoria.

It's funny this post came up today, Edit.... er yesterday, I was driving around yesterday in melb burbs I was sitting in traffic and every direction I looked I was seeing a territory and I'm thinking jeez theres a lot of terri's ......... they must be a ripping car to drive.

Surely it has to be the presence of local manufacture of the territory that has an effect? Or perhaps does Ford concentrate their marketing dollars in an area that is in their own back yard?

Spot on a family sedan use to do the trick no problem at all, now it needs to be a $100K 4 x 4 with diff locks and hi/low gears.

Same mentality that the first home has a media room, 4 bedrooms, a home office and a pool. When my first memory of my parents was 2 bedroom flat and I shared a room with my brother.

When visiting family that live in rural QLD (poor buggers), I hardly see any Fords at all, new or old. Coming back to Victoria, every second car on the road is a Ford. On my daily commute I still see dozens of old EF Falcons lumbering around, you don't see that in QLD.

Cars were once built on a frame, had a solid rear axle, had higher ground clearance, with larger profile tyres. They were also much cheaper and not as fancy. It was ok to beat them up a little more. Now if you are going to be a little rough on a car and you are going to pay good money for it, might as well get one that is made for it.

I am in Vic and I drive a Territory, great car handle well, lots of space etc and I have 2.9 kids so its a good all round vehicle. Take one for a drive

The tasmanian results have a much greater level of percentage differences than the other states do over the previous years. These sort of things would probaby be down to fleet renewals etc. I dont know how they do it today, but I am pretty sure that rental companies used to be able to register the cars in the cheapest states, even tho they werent going to be based there. The other thing of note is that there is only one Australian car (camry) that shows up in the top ten for the three states (qld, nt, wa) furtherest from the local manufacturers. Either the citizens dont care about local manufacturers, or that importers who boat their cars in from overseas have a supply and cost advantage over those who have to truck 6-8 cars at a time over 1000's of kilometres.

So all those low-slung, monocoque cars and utes running around Australian farms and bush since the 1940s must be a figment of my imagination?

Come to think of it, the idea of all that "SUV" stuff came from the USA didn't it?

Nothing much that couldn't be solved by some hessian bags and a block and tackle in the boot.
