Just found this from another forum......Chinese car sales are booming!
I cannot believe how far China is pushing ahead with growth even after all those ghost cities they have built. Just imagine how bad the traffic is in some of the major cities.... https://ph.news.yahoo.com/chinas-fir...--finance.html |

And this is why peak oil has or will come about a lot sooner than predicted because no statistical analysis could have predicated the unprecedented growth in China. Black gold is going to be in short supply a lot sooner than first predicted.

China at present is UNSTOPABLE................................. They made it thru the GFC unscathed and they have kept going ever since. Was just watching tonight on ACA about K'Mart supplying soooo much cheap Chinese made goods that no one else can compete. Its scary. |

Yeah, China is a crazy place. Statistically, your average person is still so poor they can't afford a pot to ____ in, yet even the "small" (percentage wise) nouveau middle-class represents a HUGE (numerically) market.
Whilst we tend to obsess about how much is being MADE there, we need to remember that it is also a HUGE (and growing) consumer market.

I've just come back from Chongqing and Nanjing, and I couldn't believe how many supercars I saw stuck in traffic jams in the city centres. The new middle classes certainly believe in showing it off!

People in China will buy a car even its a sub 1 ltr displacement model for city drive if they can afford to. The buses and underground trains during peak hours in Guangzhou and Beijing where I lived for a total of 20+ yrs are just packed with human beings, like sardine can. But if you decide to drive, the traffic is PITA with average 15-25kph, the only non busy traffic days in the cities are the chinese new year (but then comes the disaster of intercity travel on the highway, esp when its rain and snow at the same time around 0℃)
Even there is only one car in three household sometime in future, it will have a major impact on the oil price (think just Shanghai alone is nearly the whole population of AU). finger crossed for non petrolume powered new energy car development. |

Surely it cannot......It has been said before that once the Chinese start living weternised lifestyles then 'Peak Oil" will really hit us all.
Then again you hear the odd story that ther is still plenty of oil fields still around these days with plenty in reserve. Who Knows for sure?. Last edited by GASWAGON; 17-07-2014 at 08:07 PM. |

Its a country with massive difference everywhere.
Some rural families are keep having babies, maybe more than 5, and virtualy no fines can stop them. They are happy to pay for kids. Some women were sent to forced abortion, and the chinese goverment were being critisised widely for violation of human rights. Other families (mostly in the cities) have followed the 1 kid policy. And young "westernized" couples in Shanghai, like my sister, opt for having no kids at all, because feeding and raising children might totaled their "lifestyle". The one child policy is far from perfect, the policy maker worried about having 2 billion+ people and by then would be too late to do something to "control". They start to allow couples having 2 kids now, mainly due to unprecedented growth rate of aging population. OTH, India might be another candidate to contest the Champion of population sooner or later. Theoretically when a given resource (oil in this case) have reached price peak/or couldn't meet demand, there will be motivation/oppotunities/investment of developing/supplying alternative fuels and vehcles. Sustained high fuel price by itself creates deterent/barrier for people to keep using it. In reality, who knows when will be the next war in middle east/ eastern europe/east & south china sea, the USA economy/ USD exchange rate/ gold price, the collapse of the realestate bubble and long term economy slow down in China, the rise of India, milestone development of fuel cell powered cars, maybe Great Wall or Chery will become today's Hyundai or even Toyota............ |

If you really meant that, you'd overpay for a property in Glen Waverley, tear down the modest house that exists and replace it with a grotesque McMansion with five bedrooms and seven toilets, despite only having two people live in it.
Make sure to also impress your friends with the $200,000 cars that you can't drive properly (road rules are hard), and be sure to beat your kids up when they don't get A+ grades at school, thereby jeopardising your status as a super-parent when your kids don't become lawyers or doctors... Of course, I jest...or do I? I forget.
