Hi peeps, my first post here as I needed some advice as this has been a recent discussion topic with some friends. My apologies if this topic has been brought up previously, I did search through 4 hours prior to typing but there is a lot of info to get through.
Our discussion is what car would be put away which has the best potential to perhaps increase in value over the next 15-20 years, whilst enjoying the car on the rare special occasion. This was brought up especially as ford and Holden are closing locally, and we believe nostalgia will kick in when it does down the track. We have other cars that we drive regularly, and storing money in a bank at around 3% is crap. We have other investments as I know most will say invest in something else, but for the sake of this topic could we agree it has to be cars. We discussed that cars with race pedigree mean something, but other cars do become sought after also if well maintained with low km's. Some cars we brought up are the FPV GT cobra which I love, FPV gt 40th edition, boss 355 r spec, FPV GT-F, HSV coupe gts, coupe 4, cvz8 Monaro... (I reckon there are to many but it's been mentioned so I'll let you guys decide). Early 911's have increased already, porches 944's? It helps if the cars have depreciated and levelled off just prior to hopefully increasing. We don't have unlimited budgets so cars that most people can afford is what we have spoken about. Anyhow would be great if people could contribute the're thoughts on cars you would buy now if cash is available, on the best possible choices to buy. Appreciate the feedback. |

I keep telling the missus my faded, squeaky, 300k+ EL XR8 will be a classic one day, hence I can't sell it despite her efforts.

I think the performance based Commodore and Falcon utes (including HSV & FPV) are going to be sort after in years to come.
We may end up with a lot of US Muscle cars but I can't see the utes ever being replaced with anything similar, they will go the way of the Panelvan! |

Low km manual F6, maybe a low km stock standard first Gen WRX, manual low km stock xr6t
The problem with GT cobra, GTF, 40th etc. Is every man and his dog has put one away, in 50 years time there will be an hundreds of low km cars. Why are old muscle cars so valuable now...besides being cool, no one gave a **** years ago and therefore there are only a handful of low km cars. Use you money to buy a house or unit, better return than a car will ever be. |

I recon Mazda RX8's as you wont see another production rotary made.
but if its just for Financial gain, there are much better investments to make than cars becoming classics.

XA coupes were worth $350 at 15 years old,$1000 at 20.
I agree on the 6T powered cars holding some sort of premium,but it will be a long time before any of the current generation of aussie cars are worth what they were new,let alone have actually gained anything.

heaps and heaps of cars that have attitude will be sort after as cars become more stale.
In saying that a T2 must be at the top of the list, PM if interested...LOL

You've got to pick something unusual. Something that didn't sell in big numbers, or if it did, was something that people just used, abused, and threw away.
Look at the utes from the seventies...we wanted "a ute". I really wanted a Valiant ute with a 265 hemi, but they're rare as hens teeth and simply unavailable. A Falcon would have been good, but similarly, not many around. Kingswood utes? We ended up with one. There are that many of them still around that it's staggering...you can get a great V8 one for a few grand. But that's the problem...they're not worth much. However I saw one XB 250 ute for sale in excellent condition for well over ten grand. The one Valiant ute I saw was similarly expensive...precisely because they're just not around anymore...workhorses, used, abused, let rust away, and scrapped. Same with panel vans. Holden utes are only still in abundance because they were the biggest seller in the 70's, so naturally there's more left around. Not really sure what modern car would be a future classic...better men than us have tried and failed to predict the future wants of car enthusiasts. I'd bet on cars that have already been mentioned...first gen WRX's (standard ones if you can find one), RX8's, turbo Falcons. Possibly (and this is an oddball one), those little Suzuki Mighty Boy utes. Still seems to be a reasonable amount of them around but they are dwindling in number. I saw one of them a while ago with the old Suzuki Swift GTi running gear...and by christ would it have been a fun handful to fling around. |

Its near impossible to really pick.
I mean who would have thought kombi's would be going for what they do now. You need to look at what cars either pushed the boundaries for its era, or really stood out for some reason.

I think the biggest problem with storing any late model collectible cars will be electrical gremlins. You pack a late model car away today and do minimal KM in and before you know those fault lights keep popping up on the cluster, not to mention all the other electrical components that aren't "monitored". They have come a long way since only needing fuel and spark to keep them going.

i think one of these will increase in price in 20 years
95-99 x2 hyundai excel, why because they were so popular back in the day and once the p platers that had these as first cars get sentimental they will want one to show their kids and think back on the day when they first started driving i hear you all laughing but you just wait! I have a big list of future classics but not many are fords, they made too many fpv's so we have to wait for a few more to hit the scrappers so a few affordable cars on my list are: NA MX5 R32 GTR ED Sprint EA Ghia VN Calais x2 Excel Monaro v2 Avalanche ute and wagon my GT z32 300ZX first gen SWB Vitara soft top

R spec F6 manual, preferably 100% stock, Force 8 or Force 6 FPV's come to mind, EL XR8 manual, EB XR8 manual, EB GT, EL GT if you can find a mint one at the right price. A manual will generally demand a premium over automatic in a muscle or performance car and will be more sought after.
As mentioned earlier BF Cobra's are a dime a dozen really there were too many made and most been stored away, GT 40th, a lot less made and they were actually made for a reason ie to celebrate 40 years of the Falcon GT in Australia, The cobra was made Why?? No one knows, but probably to get rid of the last BF body shells Ford/FPV did not know what to do with. PS it is SOUGHT after as the OP stated, not SORT after. You are not sorting anything. Sought After - being in demand; desirable, desired or wished for. Sort - the arrangement of data in a prescribed sequence, arrange systematically in groups; separate according to type.

To me an Excel is the 90's Datto 120Y. Everyone remembers them fondly but no one wants to go back there. I'd be storing a BA GT, Monaro CV8, Aussie GTR Skyline and Mazda RX-7 SP if I had the room and cash.

In the Ford world my pick wold be the ED XR8 Sprint. It would want to be a manual, low kms, immaculate, and stock as a rock. Just try finding one already that meets that criteria!
ED, EL, AU2 or 3, BA, XR8 Manual or Fairmont Ghia V8 - stock, immaculate, low kms - wouldn't expect these to rise in value much, but they will keep their value somewhat and there will always be a demand for cars like this. Further afield I'd look at the BMW E36 M3 - MUST be factory delivered manual (no SMG crap) immaculate, low kms. I reckon these have pretty much bottomed out and will see small increases in value. First gen Mazda MX5 - these are already starting to rise in value. That's what my crystal ball is saying anyway, using history as a guide. Classic Cars have outperformed all other investments including gold, stocks, and property over the last few decades. The almost impossible part is picking the winners! |

Sorry, there will be no future classics. GTHO and first gen Monaros were classics in their own time. Thirty years on from the EA (nearly) and there are no new classics on the horizon...

If you want to make coin then look to the rest of the world and see what they are buying and loving now. Australia is less than 1% or so of all new car sales. My bet would be something like a Renault Clio or Megane Cup, a mint Fiesta ST, etc.

Luxury models of local cars.
# People still lust after "the Holy Grail of Commodores"...the VB SLE 5.0 manual with sports pack. The 4.2 is just as desirable, but the 5.0 is the one to look for. They sell for big money if you can find a decent one. # XD/XE/XF Fairmont Ghia. # Sigma GSR, 2.6 five speed manual. Of course these aren't new cars...they're already thirty years old and technically "classic" already. New cars are a complete gamble. |

Super hard to predict. If you want to ''enjoy it on special occasions'', well you also have to factor in the cost of the rego and insurance over 20 years which I assume would be fairly significant. The X series were the start-and-end of an era in itself. Technology, shape changed. Kind of like that 1950's era home Decor - completely different to anything previous or thereafter (even if certain objects contained Lead or were radioactive).
