Modern day Cobra.

Funny how at 2 litre the Mazda engine makes 158hp, then at 6.2 Litre GM donk only makes 430 hp...the GM engine is pretty crap power wise per litre

Maybe they should fit a decent V8 to the thing

Interesting. Understand they believe handling won't be affected but I'd be wanting that confirmed. I like the concept (not the first, I think the NC or earlier had a Lexus V8 in it) but I cannot help but wonder what a turbo 4 would be like in there, something the ecoBoost from the RS.

Why waste the time and effort by using a GM 6.2Litre Dinosaur. When you could have a modern Light Weight Super Charged GT 335 Engine.

Doubt they'd be available outside the US.

On the other hand, there was a crowd on the Gold Coast who were making MX-5 based "Bullet Roadsters" a few years ago.

Looks like they're still around: http://www.bulletcars.com/cars/
And offer supercharger kits for Falcons too

The 16 year old 13B twin turbo from the last RX7 made 280HP which is a 1.3L
what would a modern day Rotary produce?

Great conversion. But nothing beats a smart car with a Hayabusa motorbike engine swap. And the absolute shame of being destroyed by something looking like a plastic Tupperware container, and the ability to park anywhere and disappear into small spaces.

Yeah those figures are so so but it's a good value for money engine and plenty versatile to screw more out of it later if required

In answer to the OP

****en oath, this is the first car in a long time I've said that about

Yeah given the opportunity I'd have one

To be honest its not that outrageously different.

If your figures are correct the Mazda is 79hp per litre and the 6.2 is 69hp/L. Basically its 10% more efficient per L.

Truth is more like 2.6 litres, had to do some reading to confirm,so its not that special at all.

These are beautifully engineered cars.

You could buy them with big horsepower Ford 351's in USA some years ago.

This is the link I found with the best comparison of rotor to piston engine, its just a different animal though, nothing like a piston motor and very hard to compare the two tbh.

you said it.

Pretty much every american V8 is crap power wise. Considering the Europeans squeeze more out of 4.something litre V8 to the 6something litre engine.

Look at the Dodge Viper. (A V10, I know) 8.4L of it and "Only" 640hp. The BMW M3 E90-93 models were putting out 410hp. From a 4L V8.

64 HP per litre for the Viper. (76HP if it was an 8)

VS

102 HP per litre For the M3.

Maybe an uneven match there. But the same figures can be broadly used across the board for almost every V8 produced in a road car.

I love the off-beat pig-iron strum of an american 8. Its brilliant, but the note of a higher revving euro 8 is something else....

They need to get their act together the americans......

We had an RX8 as it was awesome affordable practical four-seater proper sports car. That car with its dynamics and smart interior layout and practicality married to a latest generation ultra high performance four-cylinder with sequenetial box would be total and utter porn.

The Japanese motorcycle manufacturers are getting a genuine 180hp per litre with impeccable reliability, so to get 250hp from a car designed two-litre designed to also deliver torque should be a virtual no brainer these days.

Did anyone consider they do it for a reason...?

It isn't rocket surgery to get more HP per cube out of a yank V8. It is done on a regular basis.

On the subject of the OP, this is about as exciting or new as an Escort with a 351. Or a Mighty Boy with a SBC.
The MX's "rails" handling was from it's underpowered 4 banger. Dropping a bigger donk in it just threw out any sense of balance it once had
