You would think the 14 years between the 200 and 300 series, Toyota would have absolutely perfected the new Landcruiser. But but but, Toyota's are perfect!
https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-new...knocking-noise I spotted a 300 series the other day and was surprised how unremarkable the new model is to look at.

I was thinking this thread was about the 79 series and I was going to say maybe go ask the engineers who designed it in 2000BC

Those 70 Series Landcruisers are the biggest p##s take in the automotive scene. $70K for that ancient old warhorse is stupid, although not as stupid as those who stump up the cash for one.

Then the additional $50k + they spend to make them “better” and more modern. Ridiculous

Yep they spend a 100 k on them, realise they are as slow as a wet week, tune them, throw an exhaust on them, upgrade the clutch because the standard one can’t handle it, spacers on the rear track etc etc. I hope I have that in the right order.
I always say you can easily pick a 79 cruiser without looking as the sound lasts forever because they are that slow.

It amazes me that stuff like this doesn't show up in testing, nor after the cars are built and driven over a squeaks and rattles road when they come off the line.

I love my 70 series (from 1986), interior is nearly the same as my Dads 70 series from 2009.
I think it is ironic the new 300 series comes with a 202ci engine, the 4cyl in my 70 series is bigger (just, 3.4L vs 3.3).

Yep I always laugh when people get sucked into the marketing hype of how many kms manufacturers test there vehicles and in all these harsh environments then they always have these stupid issues as you drive them off the lot

I seen a 200 and 300 parked side by side the other day.. They are so similar its not funny. Looks like the roof etc is carry over. Seems like manufacturers are going to do less to cars between models then they used to. If it aint broke why fix it.

I would rather spend $30,000 of a base spec Ranger/DMAX/HiLux and spend the rest on something like a Mustang. $120,000 for a vehicle to drive around a paddock or up a dirt road is ridiculous.

You guys are being a bit harsh on Toyota.
Toyota is always quick to respond and deal with any quality issues. For instance look at how quickly they dealt with the DPF issues on the Hilux.....

You forgot Power Windows and Infotainment that looks like its 10 years old already.
The A/C Control looks from 1985 though. Toyota sure has paid back their R &D on this model many times over now. But to their credit...these things dont die. Overseas they still get the 1HZ Straight 6 Diesel model with wind up windows...now getting into one of those is like stepping into a time warp.

They are only held in by one bolt and the metal is real thin, only takes 12 months for them to crack and fall off. This has been a problem since the current shape came out, which is five years... Its not a big thing, because you can solve the issue with an extra two self drilling screws. But the fact is its taken 5 years for them to acknowledge the problem.

Everyone hanging crap n Toyota. Yes they are overpriced. But have the market pretty much to themselves. Their 70 series is basic and I'm pretty sure the door handles, hard stick, door cards, air conditioning control vents would be he same design as my old 60 series.
Not everyone wants a tonne of electrical components in their car. Wind up windows = less electrics. They even have a rubber peace attached to the rear view mirror now to stop it rattling. Just evolution. It's been doing the job for decades ago why change when the demand for a basic hose out 4x4 is still there. If the 70 series didn't exist, there would be no other option for a big basic 4x4 that's capable of the loads and abuse that they have been handling since, well, the 40 series really. The ONLY option really is the Defender.... And that kicks off at $90k so.....

Having a Landcruiser is like having a dog in your handbag
I see your 300 series and raise you a 7 seater crew cab pick up for under $85,000, and you can drive it on your car licence |

I kinda want to like this, but I'm not sure on the probable nightmare of lack of reliability.
Although it couldn't be any worse than the Fuso posted above.

And like the Landcruiser 70, this is why punters complain about comfort levels, electronics and performance levels, using them to putt around cities instead of their designed purpose.

Look at the size difference between a 79 series and the GAZ Trackmaster - I look forward to getting it wedged under the Montague Street Bridge in South Melbourne. They need to make a civilian version of the Thales Hawkei ute they make in Bendigo, I wonder if they could get one of these down to the $100,000 mark rather than the circa $750,000 they cost now, they're super nice inside for something used for military purposes. Yep Fuso had their issues 2011 to 2015, but they seem to be sorted now, I have a 2010, would have no problem buying a 2022 @ $80,000 inc ORC, the Isuzu 4x4 truck is over the $100,000 + ORC so up there with the Cruiser and they have their issues too.
I have not seen one of those Gaz trucks in person yet, the build quality looks ok but the chassis looks al little thin for my liking, the price is $90,000 + ORC for the base model so its Isuzu and Landcruiser money. Just having a look at the chassis flex in their promo vid, it looks like its not going to last long if you intend to do a lot of off-road work with the bumper nearly touching each headlight and the amount of tray flex, I cant see the chassis being a strong point with that much flex and im sure we will see some cracked ones in the future or even separation from the body mounts. Looks like its more than a capable 4x4 but how is the long term reliability, will it last with what Australia will throw at it ? or will it just make it through the warranty period like most Lada's did Pretty sure most new Landcruiser owners dont even go off-road, I think out of every 10 we see at work, 1 will have some dirt on it, I think its more that they cost $100,000 and people like to show off rather than having a practical car for their requirements. |
