Default internet and moving house

as the heading, currently we have NBN with AussieBroadband on 2 PC's been excellent service, plus on 2 mob phones both with Boost.

Do I really need NBN could I simply run internet via a hot spot from the phones?
I am really ignorant of this whole crap tech stuff

You can do it but it would get expensive using mobile data compared to fixed unlimited data.

Streaming data disappears at a rate of knots.

I think the deciding factors are mobile reception, data requirements and cost of 2 plans over say 1.
I personally just tether my phone to my pc. Yes im on a reasonably large data plan on my phone, but also live in an area with good 5g reception. So internet speeds over the 5g are good and i get away with a 200gb data alowance no problem. I have never run past the 200, even if i do it will slow the speed not charge extra.

Tonz, I hot spot a lot with my phone when travelling, ok for internet surfing but will guarantee it will be very slow at times depending on location & carrier, as for media streaming well don't hold your breath for good service.
I will take NBN any day.

A lot of people are abandoning fixed line connections in favour of mobile internet. More and more content is being consumed via phones, and less on PCs. If you're not a big streamer (and by big, I mean, you watch many hours per week in 4k), it probably is worth looking into mobile. NBNco are increasingly worried about mobile internet providers undercutting them, so it's clearly a viable alternative.

Not a lot of undercutting going on at the moment as far as I can see.

Optus currently have a 500Gb 5G mobile plan for $69pm, no contract. 5G is much faster than FTTN.

Yes, but there coverage is rather limited, especially if you're outside capital cities or major regional centres.

https://www.optus.com.au/living-network/coverage

It would pay to check on the coverage before you went down this path, IMHO.

thats the rub if I go phone then optus no no no so leaves me with Boost/Telstra no complaints with the service. but the comments hae cemented that seperate internet is required.

That would be great if 5G worked here or in any of the towns I like to work in.
I'm sure its great in the city.
Currently staying in the main street in Yackandandah with no mobile coverage on Optus.
btw using house Wifi.atm.

As FroxtrotGolfX states the coverage is poor in anything other than the cities.

There's 5G coverage in Pt Lincoln (assuming you arent moving far). Telstra currently offering 180Gb for $69pm, or 300Gb for $89pm. I'm only bringing this up because if you're already paying for 1-2 mobiles with probably a lot of unused data, and if the best you can get is FTTN (?) then 5G may well be the superior choice.

5G is still a joke, roll out is slow and again depends on which carrier, so many dead spots.
