Default current victorian p platers restrictions

gday

ive been askin most of my friends, parents other adults about current p plates restrictions, but with so many ppl only knowing so much, i donno whats true and fales anymore, so what are the current restrictions for p platers in victoira, this to do with engine mods, speed, cars etc stuff like that.

Engine mods - don't know

Speed - same as fully licenced drivers

Cars - the general rule is no more than 125 kw/tonne or 3.5 litres/tonne. There is also a prohibited list - this mainly spells out the cars that exceed the above limitations, but may include a select few that are close, but not over. So an old 5 litre V8 with say 120kw in a car weighing 1400kg or less would be restricted for P platers as it exceeds 3.5 litres/tonne - even though it's power/weight ratio is low.

As far as I'm aware, there is no limit to engine mods, as long as they don't put you over the power to weight limit. The rest is spot on.

There is a list of restricted cars available on Vicroads web site, although they state that is is not complete, it gives you a fairly good idea. Some examples that are on it include 250ci (4.1L) I6 Ford Cortinas, any BA Falcon ute and Lotus Elises.

So, unless I am mistaken, the only real difference here in Victoria for P platers compared to fully licensed drivers is that power to weight limit, oh and the 0.00 blood alcohol - if you get breath tested and it says you have any alcohol in your system, you're up sh!t creek...

I dont know if it's different in VIC, but in NSW, P platers are not allowed to drive any vehicle with:
- 8 or more cylinders
- Turbo charged vehicles (diesel exempt)
- Supercharged vehicles (diesel exempt)
- Any engine performance modifications
- certain high performance 6 cylinder engined vehicles.

This comes into effect after July 11, 2005. If you got your licence before then, you are exempt unless you are disqualified for a serious driving offence.

I got my Ps yesterday which means I missed out by 2 days... 2 LOUSY DAYS GODDAMMIT.

I finally get off my Ps and onto my full license the end of this year, can't wait, no more having to display those damn P plates, no more power-to-weight restrictions, and I'll be able to have a beer without having to wait until my BAC drops to 0.00 before driving! WOOHOO!

Sucks to be a P plater, and from what I've seen, us Victorians have less to complain about while on our Ps then people from NSW...

I didn't get my Probationary license until I was 24, for many reasons, some of which were beyond my control.

I think the government has done an alright job of the new ledgo. They haven't just blamed "high powered" cars and banned them, while letting the turboed jap-boxes get away with it.

Mind you, no V8 sucks @rse.

True, I'm not a big fan of the taste of beer, but it would be nice to be able to enjoy a drink of some alcoholic beverage without thinking to myself that I have to wait until ALL the alcohol is out of my system before I can drive again. It was just quicker to write beer then alcoholic beverage.

What's been said is correct; 125kw/1000kg or 3.5L/1000kg (tonne or ton?). As for cars modified to be over the limit, i don't think they can get you. They work off the original (manufacturer supplied) power rating. Unless someone invents super-accurate dyno's that fit in the boot of an SS, it's unmamagable...

theres nothing in legislation that limits mods. It is a bit of grey area but it generally goes like this.

Generally, turbo/supercharger conversions are frowned upon without engineering certificate, exhaust cant be too loud or car too low.

Turbo cars bring a whole new set of "rules" eg you can either have an intercooler or a pod but not both. BOV are illegal unless stock, no boost controllers and no management systems. Rollcages must be within acceptable specs regarding lenght, width, material, bracing etc.
Number plates must be visible from a 45degree angle.

Having an import makes you 100 times more likely to be picked for one of these things. If you drive anythinga Ford or anything non-Jap then only worry about too low, too loud.

of course all this applies to everyone, not just p-platers, right?
Just p-platers get picked up on this stuff twice as often.
