Default You Clever Southerners!

OK, I've got to have a whinge about this.

How exactly does the whole country shut down for a day because of a bloody horse race? OK, So the actual race only goes for a few moments, but I'm guessing 20% of Australians aren't even turning up to work today, and the ones that do will be ****ed from 10am.

I find this ridiculous. Horse racing isn't a particularly Australian sport, we didn't invent it, we don't dominate it internationally, and it doesn't inspire schoolkids to go out and stop growing so that they can be jockeys...

If someone stood up tomorrow and said that the Rugby League (or, continuing my Australian-only theme, AFL...) Grand Final was going to be held at 1pm on a Tuesday, do you think that the country could ever be ground to a halt?

But somehow the Melbourne Cup become a defacto national holiday. My question is: What mischief and buggery did you crazy Melbournites deploy to make this happen?

HERE HERE! Try running a shop and ordering parts from suppliers in Melbourne. "I'm sorry, we're all out getting drunk watching little men ride big animals, please call back tomorow. No, wait, call us on Thursday, we'll be hungover tomorrow."

Shuddup.. its a damn public holiday, one of the few we have left, dont rock the boat :
I couldnt care less if its for a horse race, a golf match or 37 overweight transvestites doing the chicken dance... if its a public holiday I'm all for it.

Queenslanders to this very day remain bitter that Toad-Racing never grew to the giddy heights or Mainstream acceptance that horse racing has attained.

The "Brisbane Hop & Croak" to this very day remains an almost unknown and little patronised event.

RED_EL_XR8... An unlikely ally!

But back on topic - What's so good about the bloody Melbourne Cup? It doesn't involve any Australian traditions like shooting roo's or drinking VB or playing beach cricket...

No idea. I don't know why it's a public holiday either. Most of those who take it off don't watch the race. For my working life I have never understood why it is a day off. However it does com very close to my birthday and means I get the day off work for it!!

Awwww cmon - it is one of THE greatest Aussie traditions!!!!! Dont ask me how........it just is.........

And im at work too..........and it sucks........ Cant even have a beer in the office for the race!!! All the big wigs made this rule - then they all go off to the track/pub and drink booze. But make the rule that those in the office cant even have a sniff of champers for the race.

Mutiny!!!!

hang on, lets do some maths. How many people live in melb? How many people go to the cup? These are both estimates, but, lets say, 1 mil live in melb, 100,000 go to the cup??? Why do 800,000 of the residents take the day off then? Beer at home!

Nobody knows why it is a P/Holiday for Melb Cup. Its the same as having Queens birthday holiday. 1st - Shes the bloody queen of England and the poms dont even get a holiday, 2nd - we get a day off on a day that is nowhere near the old bags actual birthday. We should just stop naming the P/Holidays and call all of them, Lazy Bastard day. Then it doesnt matter what they are for and it's something most Aussies will understand and not whinge about.
