Question xr6 camshaft modification

I went to an enginge rebuilder yesterday to see about getting a better camshaft for the ef xr6. The guy there said that without upgrading the computer and the stall converter there was only 1 that was suitable for that car. A crow 2222519 cam $490.00 and a lash adjuster set 12, for $127.00. And $180.00 to fit does this sound right. It sounds a little expensive, to me any way.

He be talking ****. Wade make cams that are suitable without ECU upgrades. Best bet is to go to someone who actually knows what they are talking about, and unless it's ticking HLA's are not requires as long as it's shimmed up properly (for a regrind cam that is) and even less problem if you go for a billet one.

People's opinions on what is streetable vary quite a bit. The mechanic was just covering himself so when he fits a monster cam with the stock ECU and auto trans, the customer doesn't come back whinging that the car won't idle and has no power below 2500rpm.

I wish I had a dollar for the number of times I had reccomended surecam on this forum!

I did 14.5 on a regrind surecam im my manual EB XR6, OED666 did 14.2 in his manual AU XR6 engined ED with a surecam, and UNR8D did a 14.7 in his auto NL fairlane with a surecam. BI6TIM will do a high 14 once he drops .1sec off his 2.3/2.4sec 60ft times, with, you guessed it, a surecam.

Billet cams go for about $400 I think, regrinds are about $160.

The number is 3352 4777, give phil a ring, tell him what you are looking for out of your car and what other mods you have, he will sort something out for you that you will love

I really should start charging him for referrals :P
