Default Thames delivery van..

Hey guys, need some help finding out info on a possible new project.

Being working on a mates farm lately and went up to the back patches today to clean up for next season and found a whole heap of old cars sitting around, one that caught my eye was an old delivery van. So I asked one of my boss's and he said it was a Ford Thames.. Not much else except that it was similar to the prefect and had an old sidevalve engine.

The prefect was the equivalent to the Anglia 100E yes? So anyone know what this might be? Looked similar to the 307E vans but i'm guessing if it's still got a dated (at the time, wasn't it?) sidevalve engine it wouldn't be, however it had the roof vent on top and the front looked similar.

The only other thing is it had three letters on the bonnet, and from memory it was CWT.. So I was thinking 300E CWT.

So would it be possible i'm looking at a 307E van with a sidevalve engine put into it later on?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. It's got a whole heap of rust but if I do a fabrication course next year i'm thinking of getting it off him to do as a rod/side project (was thinking more of a sled look with roof chop).

Thanks for that link, some sweet cars through those pages.

Not 100% sure on the front grill, but it was very similar to that. Tail lights were the same from memory.

Anyone know how much something like this in shell form would roughly set you back? (the one on their property has a fair amount of rust, though everything is there and it was running when they parked it a couple years ago).

Thinking of grabbing it and doing a V8 (from those pics they seem to fit)/roof chop etc if I start fabrication etc next year.

Has that red van got Escort rear doors on it or is that how they were? C.W.T means "cubic weight". I think it refers to how much it will carry.

where abouts are you? ive been looking for a thames 300e for a few years now and would be interested if you wanted to sell it. the 300e was the van version of the 100e prefect which had a similar look to the mk 1 zephyr. they came in 2 versions which had different trim and weight capacities, if you could post up some pics i could identify it properly for you.

CWT actually means hundred weight, a unit of measurement.

Not sure on the doors, have a look on that link for other anglia vans. Might give a clue to it.



That was the badge (though it might have being the 7 version of it, check tomorow)..

Hey mate i'm in s/e suburbs of melb. From the pics i'm almost certain it's a 307, but i'll let you know. I'll try take some pics (don't have a camera, but I do have a poor excuse of a camera phone).

I don't personally own it, however if I take it on as a project and can't finish it for whatever reason, i'll let you know.

Thames like that was a light truck...

yes, they fit.

if you cut out everything except the outer guards and fit a full chassis.....

XCGXL - those are the original doors. escorts are very similar.

Theres a rusted flatbed Themes truck sitting on display out the front of the local recyling part of the dump here in Canberra. Bigger than all those posted above though. (about the size of an F150)

The red van posted by ebxr8240 is the Thames. I am not sure if the later vans (the 105E) were also called Thames. There are a couple of the 100E style in Perth that show up occasionally. One has a Jap motor (I think a Toyota twin cam ) and is apparantly very fast. The other is a stunning black number that I think runs a 1500 Ford motor. The Jap engine required some cutting of the firewall.

Being an "Old Bugger" , there were 2 versions of "CWT" (hundred weight) the American version which was 100 Lbs (pounds weight) per CWT and the English version , 112 Lbs per CWT.

The old American "Ton" was 2000 Lbs
The old English "Ton" was 2240 Lbs
The new Metric version is "Tonne"

So the Thames would legally carry 560 Lbs (5 CWT) . Converted over to metric , the van would carry 254.55 Kgs .

Edit: yes xcgxl , C = 100 in Roman Numerals (AFAIK)

Martin , most small flatbeds of that era were 30 CWT trucks , Morris had one also .

Which is about 1.4tonne (I think) in new money. Thats was gross weight, not the weight it can carry.

thanks there popinfresh, i would appreciate that. the thames was the name given to all of fords commercial range and took over from the fordson name.
hence why some models were badged as both thames and fordson in the transition period. in my opinion the best way to power these little vans is with a 4cyl or a v6 engine as there is just wat too much to do to make a v8 feasable. i would love to see those pics when you get them as i really love these little vans.

Yep, that's correct...funny you should mention "cubic", I remember back in the olden days : my grade 7 teacher asked the class what CWT meant and of course I put my hand up and said "cubic weight!!!" . He soon straightened me out on that one and I've never forgotten. Funny that it's been 38 years since that day and it's come up on a forum question!! And yes, I'm 50 this year but still a revhead/car nut...Cheers Linz.

Hey Ringo, the picture posted by monty is actually it (i had a closer look today), minus the V8 of course!

Does anyone know if any of these came with a sidevalve engine? Or would it have been put in afterwards do you think?

Good on yer Norm, I was trying to raise the energy to post an explanation but thankfully you beat me to it.

By the way, the Thames Trader light commercials were infamous for dropping the track rod, resulting in both front wheels turning outwards and the whole unit doing a forward sommersault ... an interesting ride as it was pre seatbelts.

Hi ... a bit late but if you still need help with this van let me know As I have 2 of them. .. 300e is the model, 2 diffrent weight carrying capacities were made thats the cwt ( i think i got letters right) any how lift the bonett (from window) not at front, leaver is under middle of dash.. under battery tray is the comp plate with info that i can use to tell you anything about it..Also on top of the left shocker tower there should be a brass plate get those numbers and letters two this will help you id it.... If you did not get it let me know as i would love to make a matching trailer or even get another to restore .. I know some other places you can get a lot of help too, i tryed to put a pic of my vans up but too hard ! PM me if you want to see how they look done and i will send you some pix, pm me a phone number and i will call you as i would like to know if it is still there ! Cheers, Darryl

That would be the commercial van version of what I know as a 100E Anglia
the predecessor was the 93E and the one with the pointy front and z back care the 105E , common in unzud in the early 1960's

Yes that 5 CWT would mean 5X112Lbs carrying weight
but no to the 30 CWT is not the Gross it is the amount of weight it can carry
if it was gross it would only be able to carry about 300Kgs
back in the "100E" days
Prefects were 4 door cars
Anglias were 2 door
and the vans were called wait for it
ESCORTS
