Default System one oil filter?

I tried a search but nothing came up. I've just been down at a couple of the local auto parts places here (damn not being able to get everything at one place : ) and I was told by a couple of places, Autobarn guy seemed to know the most, about a system one branded filter system. It is apparently a washable reusable oil filter which seems like a really good idea to me as you'd be able to see any bits of metal or anything floating around inside the filter. They're about $300 which seems like a good price for something reusable. Anyone used or know any more about these?

Can't say I've heard of them, but at $300 bucks I think I'll keep buying my RycoZ9 for $10.
Plus the bludy mess washing an oil filter, you must be keen.
try ringing Coventrys.

I would rather get the disposable ones. You would never be able to wash the gunk out of it and would also be a pain to wash.

For $300, you can buy a Ryco Oil Filter for each of 30 oil changes. Are you going to keep your car for that long, -- Average two per year @ 7000ks equates to 15 years-- or is the next owner going to get, and use, the benifits you paid for with the System One Oil Filter? Can't take it with you if you change cars because it probably wouldn't fit the new car.

And as jaydee said, think of the mess you'd make washing out all that old oil. They may be a very good filter but not very practicle unless you're running a taxi or high mileage fleet casr etc.

2 per year!?!?! I change my oil every 5k which is every 2 months and I'd also NEVER EVER use Ryco rubbish. It would be a pain to clean but I like to know what is going on inside my engine and if there is any metal shavings in the filter it would be handy to know before something goes bang again.

the system1 oil filter is a very high quality filter used by many drag racers... it comes highly recommended!

If you're really concerned about metal filings in your oil, have you seen those magnetic sump plugs on ebay, that might be the go for you.
They have a small probe on the inside that is magnetic and obviously attracts any metal filings etc. so when you change your oil you can tell.

As for Ryco being rubbish well there's not much else to choose from and I've used them for donkeys years on my clevo and haven't had any probs touch wood.

I used to use Ryco on my EL but I changed to Purolater or K&N since I saw the difference in how long they keep your oil clean. Do you know if the magnetic plugs come in oversized thread sizes, I've had my plug hole retapped.

I use a system 1 filter, had it for about 10 years , its great.

I suppose if you have a $10.00 engine you would use a $10.00 filter.

For me its cheap insurance as you can remove the inspection plate & get a great indication of any problems.

Mate try Jegs or Summit Racing in the states. Both have websites.
Jegs have short filter for $143 US and tall filter for $163 US plus frieght.
With a good AUS dollar should be under $300 delivered to your front door.

Thanks mate, I reckon I will invest in one of these. Is the short one about the same length as the stubby version of the Z9 filter used on the AUII XR8?

Bah what do Autobarn guys know :hihi:

I wouldnt trust one myself, I sorta fail to see how you could get it 100% clean before putting new oil back through. For Purolators at all of $3 each Ill just keep buying them.

Mate log onto www.jegs.com then look under oil systems, then filters, then system 1

part number is 888-209-312361

from there write up:
Quote:
System 1 filters are designed to work properly under the worst conditions. Their elements are unaffected by moisture and can withstand extremely high pressure with very low resistance to flow. Reusable filters are also environmentally-friendly. System 1's unique filtration system is cleaned easily and quickly with soap, which means one fewer filter in our landfills each time you change your oil. Take care of your engine and the planet! Available short (3-7/8'') or tall (5-7/8'') with a black finish, these filters fit some Ford V6s and most Ford, GM, and Chrysler V8s.
hope this helps.

Geez that Truefilter Billet job looks the goods, even has a nice strong magnet in the base of it. Do you need to buy K&N style cleaning kits for these or is it just a soap and water job?

Think now I will have to look into one of these. I will be going for the billet one to go along with my polished blown motor though.

It is only $30odd AUD more than the system 1 filter anyway and it has a magnet.

They are the same price as the large System 1 filter. With handling fee and postage cant see it being over $250 for the billet one. Cheap really.

Taken from there website.

16) How do I clean the filter? Wash the stainless steel filter element in clean solvent, kerosene, aerosol carburetor cleaner or any other degreasing agent; even common dish soap and water. Clean any remaining metal particles from the media element. If inspection of trapped debris is desired, flush the particles into a clean container. Once clean, lightly blow air through the filter from the inside out to remove any small particles or cleaning agent from the screen. Clean the inside of the filter housing using the same type of cleaner as used on the filter element.

17) How often should I clean the filter? With the TRUFILTER you are actually filtering your oil. The filter media has been tested to keep oil cleaner longer. You oil change frequency will change from 3000 miles to 7000 miles, all combined saves you time and money. We recommend the filter be cleaned frequently when first purchased or when engine work has been performed. This will give you a feel for how much debris is being filtered out of your machines oil and help you decide how often you want to clean the filter for your application. At minimum, clean the filter with every oil change due the additional debris this superior filter will be keeping out of your motor. Remember, oil is the lifeblood of your motor, keep it clean!

Another one here http://www.vetteweb.com/tech/vet_050...st_oil_filter/ i'm still not yet convinced of the wisdom of this approach though.

This sound better http://powerlongusa.com/Index.htm non reusable but has a steel mesh medium. The reusable bit on the others worries me - I suspect something is bound to fail eventually (mesh holes, seal ring, valve etc).

The mesh filter & O ring are replaceable if you ever need to.

I have used a systems 1 for about 5 years now and wouldn't use anything else. Great for new engines after your first fire up and after running in the cam etc. Just pull it apart and check for debri. Also if racing at the drags and you suspect any damage, like if your mph goes away, just pull the filter and check. I change oil after every meeting so it's paid for itself just there. Thats not the real reason for them though.
